Hello all. I am new to the forum and looking for a little help.

I have a 2008 vista 338 with twin volvo 5.7's and volvo DuoProp drives.

I had routine maintenance done in the spring to the drives by my mechanic. The boat has never had any issues in the 4 years i have owned it. I launched a few weeks ago and drove it from the launch to my slip without any issues. This was only in the marina at idle speed. This past Saturday, I went to go for my first ride of the year. When I went to jump on plane, the boat did not have enough "power" to get on plane. I think I got to about 3200 rpm. I backed off and tried again, same thing. So I went back to the dock.

I do think the drives sounded funny. But that could be just because I just had them worked on, so it's in my head that may be the issue. Any ideas or thoughts?

What exactly did he do maintenance wise?
I would assume:
Gear Lube change
Grease Prop Shafts
Check prop shaft seals
Change sacrificial anodes

I assume both engines are running the same and both are hitting 3200 rpms max.

By any chance, did he install the wrong props onto your boat?
Maybe he removed and laid them to the side and when he went to reinstall, picked up the wrong got ones.
Did the props look like yours or did you even notice?

Also, verify no water in the gas by dumping your water separator filters.

Thanks, yes, that is pretty much the maintenance done. I called to verify, but I haven't heard back. The props looked like mine. It seemed to be both sides affected. Maybe fuel pump(s)???

Yes, that's very strange that both engines would be affected the exact same way.

I can't think of what could do that except
1. Mechanic put the wrong props back on (as TheDanceII said)
2. Mechanic put the wrong drives back on (different gear ratio)
3. Boat gained a lot of weight

Do you need trim tabs to get up on plane?

If so are they working?


Shot in the dark... a 318 with 5.7's shouldn't need tabs unless you have a full house.

You may have the dreaded paint in your fuel pumps. The sound you are hearing, is it a whine like bad belt? Video describes problems with paint.

Good point, but has not confirmed rpms. Also if the engines are struggling to get on plane the rpms will not raise as there is too much load on the props.

on dual engine singe prop drives, one side is clockwise and the other counterclock turn. not sure about dual prop setup though....just throwing it out there...could it be you got correct props installed on wrong sides? if you got screws turning wrong direction that may cause the issue.....

I had that problem this spring and the symptoms the OP describes are exactly what I experienced. Pray for something else, because those suckers are not cheap!

Keep an eye on your engine synchronizing gauge to see if one engine is falling off when under load. If this is happening you should investigate a fuel issue. The likely hood is nil for both engines to be reacting the exact same way to bad fuel, or both having the exact same fuel pump failure and any given time.

If you are concerned about a fuel issue start by changing your filters. Dump the gas into a can and see if you notice water or debris separate after a short period.

I always run with my port and starboard engines running off of their respective fuel tanks, rather than having both tanks feeding both engines. If I ever develop a fuel issue it will be easier to diagnose this way.

As for the doual props, both drives turn the same way, and the props are interchangeable. Single props put on the wrong drive would be very noticeable just trying to get off the dock.
