I thought it'd be good to branch a conversation off this thread: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1748&p=14524#p14524 The Raymarine series of chart plotters do a nice job all around. If I had one major complaint it's the way they fail to utilize the pixels inside the data boxes. They just waste too much room leaving a lot of whitespace around the info. This makes displaying stuff like engine data a pretty much useless proposition if you've only got a single screen. I've found a couple of tricks worth sharing with how I set mine up. I keep the databar down the right side of the screen, not at the top or bottom. I then stack the boxes to show lat/lon, time, speed, course and depth. For me, depth is the MOST important number to watch. Having it at the bottom of that stack makes it a no-brainer to find. I can just glance down and know that I'm in enough water. This isn't to say I'm not paying attention to chart depths, that's always important. But it does make it simpler to be sure about channel depths and such as the charts can be a little vague (or the channel has moved). I then use two custom pages for chart and weather combos. One split vertically, the other horizontally. This lets me see N/S and E/W views. Since the weather is separate from the charts I can follow stuff like river depths CLOSE in while watching for weather building out at the mouth of the river. Or from one part of the Bay up/down to the other. Another tip is using the Page button. Press it once and you jump between split-screen sections. Hold it for a few seconds and the currently active section is blown-up to full screen view. Likewise holding it in again takes you back to the split view.
