I originally posted this in the Vista section, but received no responses. Perhaps someone who frequents Boating Banter will provide some guidance for me.

I purchased my 2000 328 Vista the end of August last year. The boss of me and I slept on the boat twice in the two and a half months before the season ended. It was okay, but sleeping on those hard cushions in the forward berth was a killer. There was no way to get comfortable, and I woke up both times not only sore, but with a headache as well. I even purchased a roll of egg crate foam cushion from an arts and crafts store. If anything, because of constantly having to resposition it, the cushion made the experience worse.

The inner spring mattresses Four Winns now outfits their new boats with won't fit my 2000 328...I already called. So, have any of you guys purchased a custom mattress for your boat from third party manufacturers? If so, do you have any recommendations for me?

My success in convincing the boss of me to spend another night on the boat depends on me getting this done, so I would appreciate any information anyone has.

I know very little about what I am going to share as I only heard of this from another boat owner who was slipped directly across from my previous boat. (Los Alimitos Bay, Long Beach, CA) He was very proud of the fact that he had a "posturepedic" memory foam mattress cut/fitted to the forward V-berth of his 1970's 27'+- ChrisCraft. I believe he purchased a single or twin size and had it trimed by an upholstery shop. The mattress was extremley heavy and I believe it became a permanent installation.

I saw your post but don't know the brand they used in our 348. I won't be to the boat until later in the week (with luck). But perhaps asking Four Winns as to who supplies them might be a good first step. I'd imagine anyone making such mattresses would have a way to order one made to custom dimensions. Usually you end up tracing the existing berth and/or mattress and sending that in as a template. These folks often have booths at local boat shows.

We have the inner spring mattress and have found it comfortable. As has been suggested a viscoelastic mattress (aka Thermopedic) could certainly be cut down to fit. Personally I don't quite like sleeping on that type but others find them great.

I was actually going to suggest doing something like this, only recommend going with Bravada (internet/ mail order) rather than 'postrepedic'. Bragada memory foam mattresses are better and cheaper. Check out their memory foam mattress toppers too. They may even do a custom size for you. http://www.bragada.com

We sleep in the aft of our 258. The 4 in foam cushions leave a lot to be desired. We first tried an egg create pad. It was OK. Then went to a inflate-a-bed. It was to thick and took up to much head room. We have a 2 in Memory foam topper on our bed at home and liked it a lot, so we bought one for the boat. I think it is the answer. Got ours at Sam's Club. All they had were queens size for $99, so we cut it down

I topped our 298 Vista v-berth mattress with a 2" foam memory pad. I have slept on both an inner-spring mattress (Carver 406MY) and a foam mattress (298 Vista) and feel that the foam mattress w/2" memory pad is more comfortable. The inner-spring mattress was just too thin (4").
