This was yesterday in my world. A few miles to my west by Tuttle Creek Lake is Manhattan Kansas home of Kansas State University. At 8am weather forcasters predicted a 40% chance for thunderstorms and rain. At 8:30am a Thunderstorm Watch was in place predicting the "chance" for high winds and possible hail. At 8:45am a line of storms kicked up over Milford lake and west heading east towards Manhattan. At 9:15 this is what we had at the Manhattan Airport and Technology park. Took 8 minutes to do this: Anybody want to store your boat outside in Kansas or be on the lake when this is a "chance."

Yep hit there, also took out the largest Dodge dealer a few miles from there. Then it picked up went 20 miles east to Alma, KS where it hit a school and a city (both of which I have insured for 40 million dollars worth of property) Were estimating about $400,000 of damage just to my two clients in that area. Then it picked up and dropped again about 20 miles west of my house in the town of Auburn before dying out.

Wow, that is crazy!

I remember about 10 years ago Fort Worth was having their annual Mayfest when a storm blew in out of nowhere and dropped hail like that with hundreds of families hiding under tents. Scary $hit!

Kansas weather: the biggest reason for the state's motto, "Ad Astra Per Aspra" - "To the Stars Through Difficulty." You can have the most beautiful weather you've ever seen one day, and an entire town destroyed the next day. Tough place to be an insurance adjuster, as my Dad was his whole career. That hail was baseball sized and larger.

As far as boating, I've never understood how anyone can bring themselves to buy a brand-new boat and store it outside here.

They described it as baseball, softball, and grapefruit????

The adjusters write the check, it's us agents that get to hold the hands and explain to people why their 1994 GEO Metro isn't worth $10,000 in damage. It's a Joy!!

LOL - yeah, that's what adjusters do nowadays. It sure didn't used to be that way. Dad would spend days or weeks working through one claim, trying to get the best possible outcome for the insured while balancing the interests of the company. He had great relationships with every contractor, mechanic, and auto body place in KC. That was in the days when adjusting was a real career, before they automated it and replaced all the knowledgeable people with kids who can't get a job doing anything else (not referring to you!!). They used to be the sole face of the company and were given a huge amount of responsibility.

My father was the same guy. Had the checkbook for the company right in his truck. He's now a HOSOB (Home Office Son of a bitch) and is in charge of the braindead.

All I can say is wow. Hope nobody was caught outdoors, judging from the damage that hail could have been lethal.

hell early last year in Euless, crouched in inside closet - sirens blasting (wearing a motorcycle helmet), wind howling and the sound of baseball size hail hitting everything - truck was beat to hell and a rental that looked like someone took a baseball bat to it. Had to get a new roof and gutters as well.... hope all are okay uo there in Kansas.

Yup, I store mine outside.... but I keep the trailering cover on it! My Sail boat was lost to a storm, so I should no better, but....you know.

As a kid, I was spending a summer in Nebraska. The town got rocked by 9 tornadoes one night. The first building hit was the Bowling Alley  ! Just the thought of hundreds of 15+ lb bowling balls hurtling through the air at 300 mph. Now that's some good ol' American Damage!

All that funky weather that goes on everywhere is why I live in the Northeast.

Well, today we're under a tornado watch in KC and have had multiple wall clouds with rotation pass through - although no tornadoes so far. Along the way, a massive storage tank full of refined gasoline took a lightning strike down near the downtown airport and is burning out of control. When the strike occurred it had 58,000 gallons in it. Yay, that ought to be helpful to local gas prices.

Ad Astra Per Aspra...

A storm dumping 1' of snow isn't looking so bad now...the worst that would happen is my mailbox being taken out by a plow.

tackleshep, I hope your boat was not damaged.

Mike- I was just telling my wife that damn lightning strike was probably going to push prices to $6/gallon here. I was only half-joking. :(
