Who ever heard of flooding causing a lake to go dry? Amazing. Guess if they can get that embankment fixed, there's enough water upstream to refill the lake pretty quick. I drove through those storms yesterday, they were pretty nasty. Luckily no real strong winds.

Guess they have had issues in Florida as well with the erosion of limestone creating underground cavities and then sinkholes.
I have seen a couple of stories over the years of how a lake can just go dry. Total drag if you pay a mortgage there.
Gone in a couple hours is pretty unbelievable but I see it was only 10' deep - is that right? At least these poor buggers can repair the washout and it would refill from what I am getting from the story.

I don't know if these homeowners actually built on a floodplain. Looks more like when the embankment went it eroded some lakeshore and took out some houses. Pretty wicked actually.

Google maps didn't have a super close up view but it looks like it was Hwy A that was taken out.

The land in that area is pretty much all sand and the lake overfilled until it connected to the fast flowing river. I guess once that happend, it was like taking a vacuum to the lake.

Jim - I agree, if they can dam it back up, it would probably re-fill itself quickly enough to recover for the summer. It's going to take a fast acting government to make it happen though. Then build a bridge to continue Hwy A for a quick fix. I'm no engineer, but it sounds possible.

It's too late now, but I wonder if it'd been possible to avoid this by having opened the floodgates more/sooner? I can understand why it'd be bad to drain the lake 'too much' but it seems like that'd be a lot less worse than what happened.

Still, I fell sorry for those folks, that just really sucks.

On the upside (if you can even find room for humor) you have to wonder how many pairs of sunglasses, tools and other gear can now be readily retrieved from the now exposed mud!
