Post subject:  Condensation in cabin of 245 sundowner
Hi, I have a problem of condensation forming in the cabin of my 245 sundowner. This only happens when I have the cockpit cover on but when I have the camper covers on it doesn't happen. I am assuming it doesn't happen because there is more air circulating through the boat when the camper covers are on. When I went to check on the boat on the weekend I noticed condensation dripping from the ceiling of the cabin and fungus forming on the cushions in the cabin. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where or what this could be coming from. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I use the hanging " Damp Rid" Packets. They are clean and work great. Find at most hardware stores, Bed Bath & Beyond, or any of the big box stores.

Is water getting in to the cabin from somewhere? ; there was another thread recently where someone was getting water into the forward storage compartment in the cuddy of his Sundowner, If there is exposed liquid water in there, as the cabin air space heats up during the day, it will reach quite a high level of humidity especially if there is no air movement possible. When it cools down at night, that level of humidity cannot be maintained in the air and water will condense out on a cold surface; probably close to the hatch, which will get colder quicker than elsewhere. In such a case, keeping the portholes slightly open would help, as it would limit the level of humidity that can build up. I always leave mine open during our Summer on the water ( temperatures probably like your winter temperatures!!). The mesh screes on the outside camouflage the fact the portholes are open.

If it is not liquid water that's the source, but just the ambient air humidity that is the source of the water, then something like silica gel will absorb a geat deal of it. I keep a 10 litre pail of the stuff in my cuddy over the winter, which keeps it nice and dry ( used to do the same with a static caravan we used to have)

I'm guessing its just static moisture in the air. When we spent the night on our 225, the low was 43 and we woke up to condensation on the ceiling.

It must be that wet melbourne weather, i have no condensation in sunny Sydney :wink:

i have heard about these. they would be great when the boat is stored i reckon

condensation while youre on the boat ( ie overnight) is very normal i guess, unless you get more air flowing.

Maybe store the boat with the camper covers off, and use the mooring cover or the cockpit cover that press studs around the cockpit. It wont get as hot under there, and you'll get no condensation. I think you'll be surprised about the difference.
Keep the port holes open and the cabin hatch open if you can.
I also usually lift up the cushions on the bunks inside and open the storage areas to aid in air movement inside the cabin.

Mine lives on the trailer, with the mooring cover on all the time. the cabin doors open, port holes open, and the round hatch in the cabin lifted up an inch or so.

Also open the cupboard hatch under the basin. no problems after 5 years

When my Vista is at home I always have two port's open and the screen door open and the vent to the mid cabin open. Never have any issues and it always smells nice and fresh.

Gotta keep the air moving!
