Post subject: | Boat Hoist motor problem |
My boat hoist is rated at 5000lbs as a 1/2 horse motor on it. The 224FS weighs lets say 4300lbs. When lifting the boat out of the water the lift will stop at the point when there is the most tension on it. So I call the lift manufacturer they tell me I need a 12gauge drop cord, thats what I am using. They came out greased the lift looked at it a little bit it functioned properly, they also measured the volts, they were about 130 when they motor was running and dipped into the 80's when it was at that point with the most tension. So a week later friends were using it, same problem could not get the boat all the way up. Eventually they did get it up all the way. So I called the manufacturer again and once again they came out not sure what they did but I got a bill saying its functioning properly. Its not functioning properly when it only works half the time. I ended up calling another place in town that build the identical lifts but different names, I think the two outfits were partners at one time. I asked them about putting a 1HP motor on they said I could have more problems with that because of the motor calling for more volts. I did eventually have them put a 1HP motor on its working fine so far. Has anyone run into anything like this? |

Tony, it sounds like 1/2-HP just wasn't cutting it. A 1-HP motor does not use, or take, any more voltage than a 1/2-HP (assuming both are rated for the 110-130 Volts). A higher HP motor will use more AMPS, however, to produce the higher HP. You mentioned a "drop cord". Is this just a short section of cord (wire / cable) that runs from a power box (on the dock?) to the lift? And the main wiring to the box (on the dock?), is hard wired underground from the house? If so, how long is the drop-cord and how long is the cabling from the house and what gauge is it? |

The 1HP motor has been working fine. I have power hard wired to the beginning of the dock, then I use a 75ft drop cord its a 12gauge cord. Ever since the new motor its been working fine . Thanks |
