I need the upper drain plug that is also the dipstick for the lower unit. The dipstick parts is missing and I have no way of telling if the fluid is at the right level. 1995 OMC 5.8 EFI The lower unit is OMC Cobra model 3868158 It has a 1.51 ration and ser# is T0794007. I have found the plug/dipstick for older units but not this one. It has a slot for a screw driver and it is a 9/16 bolt on top. I've searched the net high and low. Any help would be appreciated. ![]() Shawn |

Isn't your drive from the "joint venture" period, when both Volvo Penta and OMC used to market it? In which case the dipstick from the VP SX or DPS is probably the same. If you search on the enclosed link, you should be able to see if the drive is the same as yours http://www.marinepartsexpress.com/VP_Schematics/ If it is like the VP one, you can check the oil level without a dipstick; the oil is supposed to be up to the level of the plug that can be seen if the rear plastic cover is removed. From memory, the plug is circular with a slot in it for a screwdriver. Graham |

I just checked; throughout the life of the SX/ DPS, before the new version came out a couple of years ago, the VP dipstick was the same part number; P/N 3854847, with an O ring 3852045. If you decide it is the right one, I recommend you get two O rings; one as a spare as they sometimes get damaged when the dipstick is removed. The right oil level is anywhere on the flat portion of the dipstick. Graham |

OK, using the part numbers and going with the Volvo Penta instead of OMC I think I was able to locate the part. When looking for parts, it seems like OMC Cobra fell off the map in 1993. I know about the buy out but finding parts for a 1995 might be fun. This is the broken one off my boat. ![]() This is the one I located on line. ![]() Wow, they ranged from $29 to $105. I order extra o rings also. Thanks abunch. I'm just wanting to get things ready for next spring!! ![]() It sucks buying a boat in the fall and only getting two days on the water. Shawn |

If its not too late I have an extra one of these that I'll sell you for $20 including shipping. On my old boat the threads in the housing that that goes in got stripped so a new one came with the new housing. I can send it to you before you pay to make sure its the right one but I'm almost certain it is. Just let me know. |
