| Post subject: | Brown water mark stain |
hi guys does anybody know how to get rid of the brown water mark stain (boating in salt water) on the hull of my boat. it has been there for quite some time, i have had a detailer try and remove it but had no luck. any feedback would be helpful. thanks |

I have found that a bucket of water with lemon juice added works very well, the citric acid takes the stain away but does not hurt the gel coat like some of the store bought cleaners. I boat in salt water and do not have bottom paint so when the boat is on the lift I take a scrub brush wet it down and let sit for a few minutes and hose it off. It is a little work but worth it to me to not have the bottom painted. Good luck! |

I have the same issue with mud/muck and silt. I use Starbrite hull cleaner (from Walmart). Dilute it just a little, about 30% is plenty. Then either spray on and rinse for easier stains, or wipe on and off with a sponge or rag for the more stuborn ones. I got off a few years of stains on my last boat using that. Just be sure to follow up with a good grade boat wax (we have many posts on that subject). Good luck! |

Believe it or not, I found a recommendation in another forum that's worked for me for several years... Easy Off oven cleaner! I've used it on my hull for the brown/dark waterline stain that nothing else seems to remove. I don't leave it on for long, and use it sparingly. But it seems to work great, and after several years of doing so, my gel coat still looks great. |

I've had very good luck with Marykate On & Off hull and bottom cleaner. It goes on as a gel and I leave it set on the stain for a few minutes and then wipe it off. I found it to work better than the Starbrite product but I had some very bad stains. I would recommend wearing gloves and you should protect your trailer with plastic. |

Just to throw another option out there... I used a product called "Slimey Grimey". Worked great on the scum lines and algae build up from our 240 being moored on the lake all summer. Spray on... wait a few minutes... use a big RV brush to scrub a bit... and hose off. |

Thanks for the feedback guys ill give them a try. I'll try the lemon juice first then if that doesnt work ill give the others a try. I'll let you all know in a few days how i go. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from down under. thanks. |
