Cool boat my grandfather owned. This was around 1974 and my mom was taking the kids for a spin. Family island cottage in the background (now owned by a hedge fund manager from Florida unfortunately).

Here is another of his boats, a Chris Craft Cobra. One of my cousins had hit a rock while out in this late at night and came back and tied it to the dock rather than putting it in the boathouse where it was normally kept. In the morning it was sitting on the bottom with both lines still tied to the cleats! Needless to say someone was in deep trouble that day!

Awesome photos, but a real tragedy with the CC. What eventually happened to it?

Wow, very cool pics, you can't beat the look and style of a classic wood runabout. Oh to have those now!!!

Wow ..... a Cobra! Those are big-time, now.

What's the other, older, dual cockpit boat?

WOW! those are both really cool boats! I see boats like these throughout my trips in the Thousands Islands. Clayton, NY has an antique boat show every August and I love to go and look at all the restored beauties. Were the phots taken in the Thousands Islands area?

The first boat is a 28' Greavette Streamliner probably built in around 1938. It was an amazing boat and for us kids the best seat was behind the engine in a little seat where the deck flipped up. Greavette was a Canadian boat builder who built small numbers of high quality craft and also focussed on racing boats. In 1939 they build a boat named Miss Canada III that ran 122 mph. The company went on to build anti submarine vessels for the Canadian Navy.

The pictures were taken on Lake Joseph in Muskoka. The Chris Craft was repaired and actually it was not the first time it had seen the bottom of the lake. The low back end of the boat caused problems in the boathouse when a storm would come in at the right (or wrong I guess) direction and send waves up over the stern and water would get in through the engine hatch and sink the rear end down to the bed beneath. I think that happened a couple of times. My uncle also got in an accident with that boat and I beleive the story ended up in the Toronto newspapers. Again it was repaired.

I loved that boat. It was fast and cool. My uncle once took me (I couldnt have been more than 8 or 9) to a regatta on the lake and he picked up two bikini wearing females who wanted a ride. We got out on the lake and one of them said she needed to pee and my uncle told her to jump in the lake. Pretty shocking stuff to an innocent kid!! The boats were sold a few years ago when my uncle sold the cottage. Those Cobras are worth quite a bit and hard to find for sale. Here is one I found that sold with some good info... http://www.antiqueboatamerica.com/ab_li ... atId=28354

I love those old wooden boats! Thanks for sharing the photo's and story. When we went to the Dallas boatshow at the end of 2007, I had to spend some time over at the ChrisCraft display. Awesome!

Gorgeous old boat photos! And yes they do still make them like that:

If the photo loads (not sure that it will) most will probably say "So what, it's just another fiberglass center console" AHA! Not so fast...

And go all the way through to page 23 and tell me you aren't floored! That's quality, THAT'S craftsmanship!

UNBELIEVABLE!...Wish I had that kind of patience, time and expertise. It must be extremely rewarding to ride in a vessel that was hand crafted like that. Thanks for sharing that...made my day.

Yup....good reading (although I did skip a bit here and there). Boaters are just a different breed...kinda like the classic and specialty car guys...we live in our own worlds when around/near/in boats.
