Stolen from another forum I frequent:

Quote:
My neighbors boat. Didn't get a chance to talk to him about what happened but it can't be good. Notice the trailer is fine, this happened on the water.

ALWAYS lift the motorbox and sniff for gas before starting. I make it habbit and one day my boat was leaking gas from the fuel filter. I never would have known if I hadn't lifted that motor box. Make it habbit.

On a down side, the battery in my boat died this weekend and you can be sure I was careful about fixing it.

For Sale: One HOT runabout! This ones "smoking" folks.. Needs a few parts and some minor fiberglass touch up, then she'll be good as new. Comes with trailer in good condition. Owner recently changed color of boat to black.

I wish there was more info. Did he have a blower? If so did he use it before starting? Did the blower cause a spark that ignited it?
What a shame. You can't be too careful.

This is why I make sure my insurance is up-to-date. Sad to see....

Here's an update:

Quote:
Turns out the neighbor had this boat for 25 years. But about 6 weeks ago some 18 year old kid was siphoning gas out of boats at the lake where we boat/moor our boat. (I leave the keys in my boat...not anymore I guess). Anyways, Mr. Wonderful was smoking while siphoning, always a wonderful combination. And the results were what you see below. Well, actually, he burned up 3 boats, 3 shore stations, and himself, which is how he got caught. No word on the condition of the perp himself.

Even if insurance covers the boat, I'm sure the disbursement won't be enough to pickup another V8 powered boat. Good luck getting money out of the kid, too, as if he's siphoning $3 gas I doubt he has the funds to sue for the damage. Can't go after the P's either, as he's 18. My neighbor is pretty much SOL.

I added a gas fume detector to my 268 as an additional safety measure in case something happens while under way. Funny thing, I found a small leak at the genset filter while installing the detector!!!
