My old boat had two batteries, my new one only has one. Has anyone had a problem killing their battery after a day at the sandbar with the radio on? Anything I should know?

Thanks for your feedback.

congrats on the new boat.

Sure I have drained a battery at a sandbar but I did have a second one to start the boat.

You can get yourself a voltage meter to monitor your batteries or go ahead and add a second one to be safe. Many of the guys on the forum who were in your shoes have done this project with lots of details on how to do it. I'm sure they'll chime in if not use the search to find these projects.

Good Luck.

I have just added a second battery and actually very simple with a little know how as far as wiring up the two batteries. Get yourself a Perko switch and follow the instructions and it should be easy from there. If you need any specific help let me know.

X2 - I have done it myself. Even if its not something you think you need...it sure beats even having to worry about being stranded.

If you do not have an amplifier, with sub, and are just driving the stock speakers from the head un it you should be able to listen to tunes for a few hours without seriously depleting your battery. Some carry one of those portable emergency battery packs on board. I added a second battery at the time I upgraded the stereo - not too difficult as others have said.

I was going to add a 2nd battery but then decided to just get this instead:

http://www.duracellpower.com/backup-power/power-packs/powerpack-600.aspx

I transfer it from the truck to the boat and back. This way I can use it anywhere. For example, camping trip, jumping a dead battery, or hooking it to a 12v air compressor for a flat tire etc etc.

I did the same thing and then ended up adding another battery after the first time I went to jump start my truck with it and the jump pack was dead from sitting around so long!!

Yea keeping a portable or 2nd battery charged is pretty important to its use.

If your boat is equipped w/ a group 27 dual purpose, it will run the sony deck for at least 5 hours and still be able to crank the boat no problem.

I have always had 2 batteries, I am a firm believer. Having a 2nd battery is good plan for hanging out on the beach all day and still having a fresh starting battery.
