Fired the boat up today and it is now time for summer. Started up and smoked just like it should at first. I found all of the drains on the engine so I can drain the water out after this weekend just in case it freezes. I must show my ignorance here now. On all the boats I have been around they either had a through hull exhaust or the exhaust came out of the prop shaft area. On this boat Inoticed that in the upper unit of the outdrive the exhuast belows are open on the bottom. Does that make sense to everyone? I am attaching a picture to show you what I mean.

Here is the video. It loaded up on me at first. A little to much gas. Also I noticed the outdrive needs to be lower as well. The video clip is 4 minutes long and is just me starting it and it running and dying and me starting again. No need to watch the entire thing unless you are bored.

I got the batteries back in my boat today am hoping to take her out tomorrow for a run. the temp is going to be less than 50 but I am chomping at the bit to give her a little exercise.

63 deg F, Sunny, no wind; and I'm crawling under the boat painting the antifoul on! Something wrong with my planning I think!

Re those exhaust hose cutoffs; bigger than those I've seen on a DPS, but they look original. On the DPS they are meant as pressure relief vents should things get blocked downstream. On my current DPS, there is no bellows as such; just a short hose attached to the transom only, the other end open. It's supposed to reduce pressure ( just makes it more noisy and cheaper I think!).

So, I wouldn't worry about thoose cutouts.

Those slits are normal on the Cobra, they let excessive back pressure escape. Usually when you run it on the hose the water will exhaust from under the gimble housing.

PS started mine up today for the first time since the long winter sleep....cranked it over two times and fired on the second time amid a cloud of fogging oil smoke--warmed up to a nice smooth idle-- and I checked the shifting into foward and reverse with the prop off. Next weekend I'll do a tune up and make sure the idle is nice and low (Cobras like the idle to be between 600 and 550 or so in gear on the water, it's a little higher on land with no water drag on the prop). The smoother you can get it to run and the lower the idle the easier it will shift.

We had a nice day (1 hour ) on the water yesterday! Just me and the little one (4 year old) The boat ran like a champ and I didn't have any issues like last year! The water temp was 42F and it was quite windy with about a 1 1/2 foot chop. I let her run for 10 min on the trailer before heading out for a good 1 hour run. Took her home and sucked all the hot oil out and put her back in the garage. Today I will pull off the oil filter and suck the remaining oil out before adding the fresh stuff.
