Post subject: | First Start of the Season - Quick Question! |
OK Gang - I have an uneducated question or two. I started my boat for the first time this season this afternoon - it was winterized last December. All the plugs are in, no worries there. My question is, I didn't see any fogging agent when I started the boat like I have in the past. Also, this being my first boat with a thru-hull exhaust, I noticed that water was coming out of the exhaust outlets while I ran the boat (in the lake). So - here are my dumb questions - is it normal to not see any of the smoke from the fogging agent? Is it normal to have water coming out of the exhaust outlets? Everything else looked and sounded great - I've been told by a friend this is normal, but I thought I'd double check with the smart folks on here. FWIW, I have the 8.1L Volvo. Thanks! |

Water should come from the CC exhaust when selected, even when running on the muffs. If you're boat is sitting in a slight "list", then one side may have water coming out while the other does not. Remember, that is cooling your exhaust gases (about 500F on a car engine) and keeping your hoses from melting, so I don't run it in the driveway in that condition but for a short time. Fogging agent.... If you haven't, try goossing the throttle. That will usually get gunk out of the intake/exhaust that is still in there. I've seen it clear as well, even after doing that. I wouldn't worry. |

Thanks Walt! That's what I wanted to hear - tomorrow I'll launch for the first time this season - weather should be 87 degrees and sunny with no wind! |

leftlane - When I started mine up, I got a good amount of smoke and it ran rough till it cleared out. Remember...we winterized (assuming they actually did all they say they do) at the same place. You know I am not the biggest fan of Phil Dill service..... |

Leftlane, I think there may be 2 schools of thought on fogging fuel injected motors. Some say it may do more harm than good. On a carburated motor the procedure is to spray fogging oil in the carburetor to suffocate and shut down the motor as part of the winterization. You obviously can't use the spray on a fuel injected motor. Some people say fogging a fuel injected motor will clog the injectors. Mercury has a concoction that they recommend if you "Fog" their fuel injected motors. I am new to the VP camp so I don't know what they recommend. So it is quite possible you motor was not fogged and therefore you would not see a large amount of smoke. |

Actually, I have the marina winterize my boat since I don't trailer much. My last boat was carbureted - maybe that's why there was a lot of smoke when I started it for the first time. I think all is good. |
