I was wondering how many years many people get out of their moorings before they need to replace the associated parts. We are on the LI Sound and just had the mooring put in for the our 3rd season (It was purchased new). I just received the bill and the guy hit me for new chain, shackles, and pennant line. I am curious if these were needed or am I getting ripped off!

I have a mooring in the lower CT River and have about 5 years on my chain and pennant. The chain will probably be replaced in the next year or two. The pennant looks new after 5 years of use.

Hey,

I had a mooring on the Thames River (CT, not England!) for a few years and kept a 30' sailboat on it. I had it inspected every two years and replaced whatever the diver told me to replace. The couple $100 was well worth the peice of mind when it was blowing 30 knots out there in September! Also, the Sound eats mooring gear!
Find a reputable diver, develop a good relationship with him and take his advice.

Thanks for the responses. After some phone tag I was able to speak to the guy and get an education. I admitted that since this is our first boat, I had no clue what to expect and honestly trusted his expertise. I was a bit concerned that he could have simply confused us with one of the many moorings he puts in. He said the village next to ours requires upper chain and pennant line replacement every year! He told me we could have stretched it through this year but since he knows I don't come out until mid October, it wasn't worth the risk. It is a small price to pay for piece of mind. I also finally learned how the mooring works! I was shocked to know there is 40' of chain before the ball. Learn something new everyday! Here's to a nice weekend to all!
