As this isn't a Drive, Engine, or Prop issue, I am posting this here. Has anyone ever replaced their fuel gauge sending unit? If so, where did you get the replacement part and what's involved in replacing it? It appears to be pretty simple as I have easy access to it. I am assuming its as simple as removing the old one, putting on a new gasket and sealant, putting in the new one, and reconnecting the wires. My fuel gauge has been stuck on full for over a year and although it makes me feel really good, it's probably not the safest way to be boating on Lake Michigan. Thanks in advance. |

Pull it out and see what condition it's in. If it has lots of rust and the float does not move free, clean it up and try it. You have to put a ground wire where the bolts go thru and hook up the sending wire. When you slowly move the float up and down, your gage should move. If not, take it down to the dealer or marine store and make sure you get one the right length. As in depth of the float. They are pretty cheap to buy, under 25 bucks if I remember right at West marine. |

Stupid boats. So I ordered a replacement sending unit for the fuel gauge issue I was having. I fit my wife body down into the engine compartment and pull out the old sending unit. Come to find out the problem was the damn float fell off the sending unit. Since there is no way in Gods green earth to get into the tank to get the old float, I just replaced the whole damn thing. So needless to say, I have a float floating in my tank. Do you think that will cause an issue? After several four letter words were shouted while trying to line up the bolting pattern and three bloody knuckles later, I have a fuel gauge that works. Stupid boats. |

typical pain in the azz boat work! I had to change the gasket on mine but it was easy because the Horizon has a big hatch over the tank that exposes the whole works. I don't think the float will cause a problem but I'd probably try to get it out. You found out the holes for the tank gasket are not symmetrical! BTW how did you get the 'wife body' down there

That float will cut off your fuel supply at two different times. If the float ever leaks badly enough to sink and get taken up by the fuel flow. This is most unlikely to happen. The second will happen, depending upon you. As you are sucking the last 1/4 cup of fuel out of the tank, it will get into the flow stream and maybe shut off your engine 3.7 seconds earlier than when you would have just ran out of gas.   Don't worry about it. It will be just fine. |
