The wife and I will be taking a week off of work for a vacation starting Sunday, June 7th. We will departing from Michigan City, IN and traveling up the eastern coast of Lake Michigan. We are going to try and get as far north as we can but we are in no hurry and will be stopping along the way their and back to enjoy the little harbors along the way.

Some of our "guaranteed" stops include Saugatuck, South Haven, and Grand Haven. We would like to make it as far north as White Lake, but mother nature (who has been less than friendly this Spring) will play a large role in our plans. Does anyone have any suggestions as to must see places or harbors? Good Restaurants along the way? etc?

I will be keeping a cruising log and posting many pictures hopefully along the way (internet access will play a role in who much posting I am able to do during the trip) to share with everyone.

Stop in Muskegon on your way north for a beer. We are always at the boat on weekends, and many weeknights.

Decent place to eat, but make sure you bring plenty of $'s.

Wow - I always envy you guys that have large lakes like this to boat on....that you can actually make a vacation out of it. My lake is just under 30,000 surface acres of water...doesnt take much to cover that.

I cant wait to see the pics...will be tuned into this thread!

Depending on the amount of time you spend cruising vs enjoying the harbors, I would think you could easily make it to white lake. Now if you can go a bit further, you have pentwater, ludington, manistee, and frankfort....then you start to get into some even better areas if you can believe that. You have the Manitou Islands to explore, head into grand traverse bay, cruise over to beaver island, up to the straits, north channel, sault locks....way too much exploring for this trip...better plan to trailer north a bit and hit some of those sites at some point or just extend your vacation by another week  Sounds like a great trip...looking forward to the reports.

Make sure your windshield wiper is working well. It looks like Sunday and Monday will be a bit wet with thunderstorms and 14 to 16mph winds from the WSW, making for conditions on Lake Michigan 2 to 4 foot waves and low visibility. It improves as the week goes on, wind wise, but looks like the only sunny day will be wednesday. Not beach weather, but should be good for shopping and exploring. Take your time and have fun.

I'd wager to bet his is Capn. I followed him on the Chicago Loop Cruise, 2-4 footers on the lake, through a driving rain....

Wish I could do a trip like this, I can't wait to hear how it goes.

well, it figures that mother nature would be a (fill in the blank) this week. The good news is Monday and Tuesday the wind will be out of the south so we will have a following sea going north. I have the camera and laptop and assuming I can get internet access at port, I will keep this post updated through the week. Wish is luck. We will be heading out on Monday morning.

File your float plans with the forum Woggy - that way, when you don't show up, people from all over the US can call the Coast Guard!

It's not a real good day to be out on Lake Michigan, local lake forecast is calling for 2 to 5 footers north. Tuesday looks much better.

We appreciate the update. We are getting ready to leave port here in a few minutes. Our goal is Saugatuck today, but if mother nature won't cooperate, then we will stop in St. Joe. I'll post later today once we arrive.

Yesterday was raining off and on through the morning, west michigan missed the tornadoes and they thankfully went east of the shoreline. Heavy rain and strong winds early evening last night, but stopped over nite. Today looks like a good day to travel, no rain in the forecast and light winds. Waves 1 to 2 feet. The rest of the week, after some rain over nite tonite, is sunny and low 70's. If you like traveling at night, the lake should be virtually flat. It should be a good finish to your trip.

If it's not too late, you might want to head north early in the week , and end your trip in Saugatuk. The Waterfront Film Festival is Thursday thru Sunday, and there is alot going on in town. Indy movies, concerts and fun.
