Just wondering if anyone else on this board is in So Cal or even San Diego. I'm pretty new to this whole thing and thought that maybe someone had some tips on good places to go without having to drive all the way to Havasu or Mojave.

Hi 1856,
Hope you're still around on the forums. I'm up in Escondido (northeast part of San Diego county for you non-SoCal folks). Depending on what you like to do on your boat, Lake Mohave and Havasu may be your best bets....
Locally, San Vicente reservoir is pretty nice for a day-trip. They limit to 100 boats, so get there early on a weekend if you dont want to have to wait for someone else to leave.
Lake Martinez is fun also, but you need to be careful about shallow water and sand banks - it's probably about a 3 hour drive, or so.
Or get out on the ocean! There's no shortage of stuff to see on San Diego Bay - aircraft carriers, submarines, restaurants to pull up to for dinner, etc.

Post subject:  San Diegan checking in .....

Wow! Aren't we San Diegans the heavy duty posters?

There seems to be a lack of fresh water to play in locally. We've been going to lake Mead near Las Vegas mostly. Our 20 fit Horizon is a tiny bit small for the windy days there, but we've learned to cope. Like to stay at the Sunset Station in Henderson for its proximity to the lake, and its excellent shopping nearby. Good parking for boats on the east side of the hotel tower.

Lake San Vicente is down for a couple of years, and it was the only close in fresh water that was suited to our needs, so going out of town is about it, for now.

Can't bring myself to drop the boat in salt water, but must admit it has been tempting a few times. Now it seems mussels are a new threat in the fresh water lakes. The times they are a-changing....

Best regards,

john

I'm from San Diego. Born & raised

Now the admiral and I cruise around Lake Michigan

I miss the motherland but there is nothing better than the summer on the Great Lakes

I think your only fresh water option is going to be east. The droughts out there have really done a number on the lakes close to home.

Post subject:  OOpps! Correction

I posted above that local San Diego lake San Vicente was closed for construction. That is NOT correct. According to the San Diego city lakes website the lake is open until April 2008. It is open for water contact on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday until October 2007. :D
I guess I'll have to check it out soon.
