Quite possibly the most intelligent response to the topic yet. I've heard every excuse (so called reason) for those who think the alcohol does not effect them. Usually this is after I have had to pry the bodies from the wreck and notify the families. If you drink and drive ANYTHING, you are just a moron.

That sums this whole debate up nicely.

I dont understand why they feel like they need to pull you over to do a "safety" checks with no probable cause. The state police dont pull you over on the highway to make sure you have a spare tire and flashlight in your car. If you are acting like a rectal orafice, yeah pull them over and see if they are drunk and then check for required items. believe me here in my area they could stay busy all day pulling over wave runners for any one of a thousand reasons not to mention the morons with their boats blasting rap music with the "F" bomb every other word. Maybe i am just getting old?

Peace out, homies!

I think that is because the risk of not having proper safety equipment is so much greater. Breaking down on the highway without a flashlight or spare tire just means you walk (if you can't get cell reception!!!), but a problem on a boat is much more serious from a safety standpoint. Not to mention that if that problem is an accident, rather than a mechanical failure, lives are at stake much more than on land.

I just want to know whatever happened to natural selection :)

VHF radio
anchor
oars
trolling motor
flares

I can think of many things that should be required on boats besides a flashlight. I can understand on the busy weekends/holidays, the water patrols want to make their presence known as part of their "zero tolerance" policy. However, I just received a citation for "No Fishing License" on July 5th(after all of the hubbub was over). The ironic part was that my wife has a license, my wife was fishing, and I only have one pole. I guess I was a little too close to the pole :) Of course, I will fight it and I will win, but they do sometimes look for ANY reason to pull up along side you. I have to take my time(let's say billable at 200/hr) and spend 2 hours thinking about this crap and going to speak with a judge. It's cheaper to pay the darned thing. ROCK- me -HARD PLACE. If you have a few hotties on board, it gives them all the more reason to stop you :)

I can see it from both points of view.

Wow...you don't stop by here for a few days and you miss all the fun. I am on the side to limit the drinking as well. I am not saying that Wolverine went about it the right way, but glad people are concerned in keeping the general public safe. Just makes it safer for all other boaters out there. But just don't draw attention to yourself and you should be fine. Like was mentioned before. Have the CC Auxiliary inspect your boat and safety equipment each spring. They give you a sticker to put on your windshield and paperwork to carry with you. After having that, all I was ever asked for was to see my life jackets and make sure they were within reach.

We have a lot of water patrol as well in Muskegon and Grand Haven and never had an issue. Boarded once and most times they see the sticker and leave you alone. The people I see pulled over have a lot of kids, overloaded boats, people acting stupid, music or exhaust too loud or just plain drawing attention to yourself. Next summer we will have three kids on board and they will surely have their life jackets on. Could add a few more kids if we have another family with us. I am 100% sure they will take a good look at me...and they should. You have no clue how many idiots I see out there that let their kids not wear their left jacket.

I think, like other have said, broadcasting that you out every weekend and kick back a 12ver while on the boat while pointing out what lake your doing it on is not the brightest thing to do. However, I would like to think that, like many things boasted about over the internet, that it was more boast than fact. I don't necessarily condone what Wolverine did but along the same line he has taken an oath to uphold the law. If someone came on here and said they were going to take their boat across Lake Winni to Menasha and rob a bank or two next Saturday, would you not feel obligated to report it?

I have not lived in WI since 1980. But even back in the day that wasn't just a "Wisconsin Thing" without consequence.

Maybe we should all just go back to the lake this weekend and remember how to have fun? I know I am going to be

One of the reasons they can pull you over for a safety inspection without any probable cause on the water converse to how it's done on our highways is because driving is a priveledge and you must have a license to drive an automobile.

On the water, any idiot can drive a boat unfortunately. How many boaters have you met that don't know the rules of the road or the words port, starboard, bow and stern? Or don't know the effect of their wake?

I am 100% for making boaters get boating licenses on our nation's waterways. I think everyone should sit through a class and pass a test in order to get your boating license. That would either help teach our ignorant boaters or sift them out of our boating population.

Just this weekend I lost a $150 inflatable raft 2 minutes after inflating it due to an idiot on a pontoon boat on plane in a crowded anchorage area. When the anchored boaters yelled at him to "slow down" he gave us all the finger and sped up through this area where people are floating and swimming.

So those of you who think it's an horrible idea that you can be pulled over for a safety inspection then the alternative should be all boaters should have a boating license. There are too many irresponsible, egotistical, drunk idiots on our waterways who jeopardize our safety and property.

Sounds like an A$$ whopping would have commenced. Pontoons (for the most part) are not very fast you could have easily caught him and taught him a lesson.

I would have been Pissed!
