I'll be there on Lake Martin this weekend. It's gonna be pretty sweet since Alan Jackson is headlining it.

Hope you guys made it through the storm OK. The smaller boats I knew took on a lot of water and one jet boat sank. I anchored way out and luckily they dropped the fireworks buffer to the side of me. I had some tense moments when some motoryachts got tangled up and came close but I weathered the storm unscathed. I heard 3 were killed. Everybody I talked to so far has boat damage... The fireworks display was really nice though!

Well the weather did end up being kick ass but not in the way I had in mind! A storm came in around dusk and brought ~50 mph winds. Fairview is located out on the Potomac and that's a very large open body of water. When the wind shifts and comes down the river it gets tremendous wave action. I was taking on 5-6' waves where I was anchored in about 12' of water. As you can imagine, everyone drinking all day and well over 1000 boats packed in a relatively small area all hell broke loose. I saw motoryachts getting slammed into the seawall, boats drifting into raftups and lots of anchors being tangled up / cut etc. Several boats were left unattended which is just crazy! Small boats that took off as the storm began took on lots of water and their bilge pumps couldn't keep up. I'm surprised the local media hasn't picked up but I imagine they will. They did give adequate warnings but many were so drunk and/or wanted to try to ride it out to catch the fireworks. I saw some pics of some damaged boats on clubsearay.com

Two deaths were from being crushed b/t boats and one girl had her leg severely severed she fell under a boat and it was evidently making contact with the bottom from the waves, she didn't make it :(

WOW...Sorry to hear about all of that.
Another reason I never drink while out on my boat...it scares me to death that things like that can happen. As a captain, being responsible for everyone on board is a huge undertaking...especially when its your own flesh and blood most of the time.
I wish everyone a safe rest of the season...ALL BOATERS!

Absolutely! Unfortunately most or many other boaters don't see it that way. Leaving boats unattended during a storm in this situation is criminal IMO. Unfortunately, you can't control what everybody else does. I might go diving for high dollar anchors later. There's TONS of them over there!
