There has been a few posts recently on the subject of rubber fuel pipes leeching odours, I think we might have a similar problem with the plastic waste pipe from the toilet. The pipe unfortunately runs under a board right under the pillows in the double bunk, and has for the couple of years we've had the boat, given off an odour that we have tried to mask with air fresheners. The pipe appears to be the original one (11 years old) so I intend to replace it with a new length to see if this will solve the problem. Anyone had a similar problem, or any views on this?

The general rule is if it stinks outside the boat when you flush, it's the vent filter. If it stinks inside the boat, all the time, the it's the hose.

The easiest way to see if the hoses are a problem is to wrap a warm damp rag around each hose for 10-20 minutes. Then smell the rag. You will know if they need replacing.

OMG, that's just plain nasty.

The towel trick is the best way to test it. But after 11 years it needs replacing, especially if the waste tank wasn't kept EMPTY as often as possible. Otherwise waste sits in the line and eventually leaches it's way through the hose. No way to avoid it, that's just how hose works.

For a straight length you could replace it with a section of PVC. But you'd be faced with some hassles getting the right diameter hose fittings for it. Pipe is generally not used because it's too stiff and doesn't allow bending. You have to be sure to secure it so it doesn't bang around or rub through something else (like the hull). But it's much more resistant to leaching odors. I'd be tempted to consider it for a section like that one.

I replaced about half my hose that leads from the head to vacuflush. It was the half that was inside the cabin. Made a world of difference. I need to change the all the hoses, but this was a temp fix, and will replace rest in the off season. Your hoses look brand new compared to mine.
