Bow Season opens here in Ohio tomorrow. I saw one decent Buck on our property two days ago. The rest have been small. I have the stealth cam out so I hope to get some pictures of him. |

I must admit I don't understand this. Are such large animals a pest in the US or is it for fun / sport? ( believe me. I am not an anti-gun supporter!). I know the (rather large, American Michigan HQ ) company I work for allows hunting in their grounds at certain times of the year for people that show the required level of proficiency. This is not the case in the UK, spiders and rats are pretty difficult to hit, bunny rabbits are cute and I'd be sacked if I brought a gun or a compound bow onto a UK site, much to the delight of some of my Italian counterparts ! Now cats in my garden I regard them as vermin in they dont have a collar with a bell on it ! Graham |

They multiply like rabbits and can, at times, do damage to property. More to the point they can easily overpopulate, compete for food, and starve. Even more to the point, the resulting summer sausage is to die for. Here in Kansas, the deer population is dramatically larger and healthier now than when it was unmanaged and deer hunting was illegal (back in the '60's and earlier). We even have a large public park in our county where the deer population has grown so large, that they've recently approved a plan to do a carefully managed "harvest" with the meat to be donated to charity. |

Interesting, being from a country family I have no problem with hunting (my city reared wife and daughter would disagree; deer = Bambi etc, even if the sausages are nice !). If they'd seen the aftermath of a collision between a moose and a car I saw in Sweden a few years ago, they may well think differently. Graham |

Graham: In Ohio the Deer population has exploded. There are more deer now that there has ever been. This is a direct result of better management. For my family it is a time for the old and young to get together for a few days and have some good food and laughs. For us it's all about tradition. The Deer are just a plus. By the way, there is nothing better that than a fresh venison steak that is cooked properly. In the states this is an expensive meal when ordered in a restaurant. This may be a stupid question. Don't they hunt in the U.K.? |

They do hunt deer in a few places like the highlands of Scotland, but I believe it's mostly gamekeepers and invited guests on privately owned estates, rather than ordinary members of the public. Getting a firearms licence for a rifle is quite difficult in the UK. (impossible for a hand gun, even if it's for use in a gun club; it's only criminals and some of our police that have hand guns here!). Shotgun licenses are not that difficult to get, if you have no criminal record and a valid reason to need one, that limits you to shooting rabbits, pheasants, clay pigeons etc. Air rifles and pistols are allowed and don't yet need a licence, but can only be sold by licensed gun dealers and they are limited by law to a certain muzzle velocity; exceed that, and you need a firearms licence for the rifle (and can't legally own such an air pistol). You don't need a license for a compound bow or a crossbow (yet), but hunting with a bow and arrow is illegal anywhere in the UK ! I was amazed the first time I was in Florida when I saw guns in a glass case on sale in Walmart! And to further protect us from ourselves, we are not allowed to buy things like battery acid, muriatic acid, sodium chlorate weedkiller that contains less than 48% flame retardant. Nor are under 16's allowed to buy knives ( even if it's in a set of knives, forks and spoons; they can buy forks on their own though!) Graham |

.......and it's illegal for anyone in public to carry a knife with a blade longer than 3", unless there is a legitimate justification for doing so ! Being a Boy Scout is not a legitimate excuse. Plus private individuals are not allowed to own CS/ mace etc. I personally think the laws in the UK are too strict. When the handgun laws were changed in the 1990's, legitimate owners, law abiding citizens with the required firearms certificates got only nominal values for their guns when they had to hand them in for destruction. If they didn't hand them in, they were prosecuted/ criminalised. We also have a wonderful system for ensuring cars are taxed / insured; if found to be uninsured/ taxed, they are seized and crushed. Irrespective of value, they cannot be sold by the local authorities. There have been cases of Porsches and modern Bentleys being crushed ! Absolutely stupid, beware of modern socialism ! Graham |
