Hi, Im in the process of buying a '06 V278 and am bringing it into Singapore waters from Thailand. To be allowed in Singapore waters they insist your boat has to have an AIS fitted. In most of the rest of the world this is only required by large ships. It allows any vessle to see where any other vessle is at any time. Big brother is watching! The authorities will charge S$1000 ($700) to install a transponder but Im lead to believe some of the newer GPS plotters have this function as standard. Any ideas anyone? If Im forking out more cash Id prefer spending on something I will find useful (ie see other ships and not just have then watching me). Also how easy is it to add more electrical equipment to the cockpit? Thanks Oliver |

Most of the new Garmin chartplotters are AIS capable. There are many to choose from made by several manufacturers. However, most are not equipped wit a transponder, only a receiver. You can get a transponder that plugs into many chartplotters, like this one. http://www.milltechmarine.com/AIS-300.htm Not terribly difficult to install, if you don't mind doing it yourself. But, the chartplotter and transponder together will run you over $1,000 easily, depending on what you want. |
