Post subject:  Boat ad valorem tax question.

I am about to settle up with the tax commissioner on the 2000 406 Carver motor yacht that I sold in May of 2008. After having to write a $10,000 check to get rid of the boat, I didn't have enough money to pay the tax commissioner until now (I was actually hoping they would forget about me). Those assholes were nailing me $1,980 a year in ad valorem tax on a $189,000 value. When I contested the value, the jerks jacked it up to $199,000 in 2008. I was able to sell her for $175,000 last year so do I still have to pay the tax on the value that the assholes estimated her for or do I pay on what I sold her for? Any experience in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Also, excuse my language but I do hate the government(s).

You should be able to file a protest on it. Take all your paper work, etc to the hearing.

I solved the problem with Kansas and personal property tax. I don't title anything here.

Most states only allow a very narrow window of time to protest the tax basis of an asset.

Is ad valorem tax the same as personal property tax? The folks in the slip next to me were paying 5K/yr to the state of VA for ppt!! This was on a Monteray, 2' longer than mine.

Yes, ad valorem is a property tax here in Georgia as well and I paid more on my 406 Carver MY than on my house (I am able to at least file a homestead exemption on my primary residence). Ad valorem on a boat is a joke and for you future boat owners, do what you can to avoid letting the county know that you have made a purchase. Again, I hate the gov't and don't give a shit if they read this as they did not provide $1,980 worth of services for me each year that I owned the boat.

Where I live in California it is slightly more than 1%. Other counties are closer to 2%.

The fact that we as a nation have become so willing to pay tax after tax is surely a sad state of affairs.
