Post subject:  Summer 2009 fuel usage

I got to thinking that it might be helpful for lurkers thinking about buying their first boat or anyone considering a move up (or down) to get a real-world handle on what people spend on fuel based on what boat they have and how they use it. I happen to keep very detailed records so the information you will be able to provide may vary, but try to include...

-Start and end date of your season
-Hours for the season (engine and generator if applicable)
-Distance traveled if you know
-Total gallons of fuel
-$ spent on fuel for the season
-Average price paid per gallon

___________________________________________

- April 24 to October 11, 2009
- 55 engine hours/40.5 generator hours
- Approx 650 nautical miles
- 754.2 gallons
- Avg 3.36/gallon (ranging between 3.08 – 3.42 except for one 4.00 fill-up)
- $2608.52 total

____________________________

A big difference for me from last year... part of the difference being a 450 nm trip I took last year over 13 days. My biggest trip this year was 196 nm over 5 days. Then there was the price of fuel last year...

For 2008:
- April 24 to October 18, 2008
- 87 engine hours/72 generator hours
- Approx 900 nautical miles
- 1262.5 gallons
- Avg 4.55/gallon (3.60 - 5.24)
- $5645.35 total

I spent more than you did this year, but less than you did last year.

Holy smokes -- 5k in gas for one season? You were ON the boat! T-Pain would be proud!

And I was indeed on board just as much this year - but getting to a destination and staying put outweighed day trips and returning to the marina meaning fewer engine hours. Plus, as I mentioned, no two week trip this season. THAT will change next season (planning already!) 8)

I don't have detailed records, but .......

Our general fuel usage seems to be pretty close to the stats that are listed at http://www.fourwinns.net. At our typical cruise speeds of 23 to 30 MPH (on the GPS), we see about 2 MPG and that's what we use to plan expected fuel usage for our outings. We also see this mileage when at a "displacement" speed of about 8 to 9 MPH (1500 to 1800 RPM).

We have the 268 Vista with the 270 HP Volvo (5.7 Gi) and dual prop with F4 props.

We always fuel up while on the trailer, so our fuel cost is less than a slipped boat, unless we would go on a trip that would require "wet" refueling after using the tank that was filled prior to launch ... which would mean (with the 80 gallon tank) we would be running over 100 miles at cruising or displacement speeds.

That should be a crime MIKE! Get out there and use that boat next year!

I didn't keep track this year, but I know I put at least two or three tanks in my 225, and about 150 gallons in my 268.

Yeah it's dismal, but we had a LOT of fun on that half-tank.
