Quote: They're called "BookletCharts," and they're an experimental service that's being offered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of Coast Survey. The online service provides downloadable (Adobe Acrobat) files of sections of NOAA nautical charts that are printable on regular 8.5 by 11 paper. "The Booklet Chart is reduced in scale and divided into pages for convenience, but otherwise contains all the information of the full-scale nautical chart," according to NOAA information NOAA has an extensive catalog of BookletCharts available for the Alaska and Lower 48 state coastlines, including the Great Lakes. You can down load them from here |

I found those a while back and downloaded all the west side of Michigan and St. Claire to western Lake Erie on the eastern side of the state. Since we spent a lot buying the boat and getting it outfitted so it was nice to have free charts available to save a little money. They are in multiple 8.5 x 11 pages so they aren't convienent for a big picture look, but are at a good scale for details, at least from my novice boater perspective. I zipped them all into a smaller file for easy storage on a flash drive so I can peruse them if I get some free time at a computer. |

Check out the following link for cheap charts of the world... this guy is into sailing, but don't hold that against him! http://www.michaelbriant.com/charts_of_the_world.htm I came across this last week while in the UK talking to a friend that sails. All runs on a laptop with Windoz XP (probably OK with Windoze 7 but NOT Vista), and all you need to add is the USB GPS antenna (there is a link for this device on the web site). You can do nice things like print out charts, and plan your route before you even leave home! I am planning to run this on one of those Acer EePC laptops (cost about $400), so the whole combo will give me a global, extremely powerful 10.4" color chart plotter for under $500... Hope this helps and maybe gives you some ideas... it works for me... |
