This was on the news this morning. This is not meant to be the start of a for/against the society thread, just the sad end to an interesting vessel. I was unaware that the Sea Shepheard Conservation Society had aquired the former EarthRace trimaran, and put it up to task on their "mission". Well, I guess they got the renaming ceremony wrong, as it sounds like it will be on it's way to the bottom of the Antarctic Ocean any time now.... You can witness the carnage here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dXCR9LX-Kc Sorry for the non Four Winns content, I just thought that this was interesting, as I had always thought the boat was pretty cutting edge. Cheers |

Thanks for the post and link. A sad occurance indeed. This forum is in need of a miscellaneous section that we can post non Four Winns boating related things. It's been mentioned before, several times, but it reverts back to the time, and resources available to add it to the board. So, I see no problem posting interesting things like this in this area. I will continue to post non FW things here, until I get my wrist slapped, or a Misc. area is created, whichever comes first............. |

This got posted on Yahoo and each side is pointing fingers. Sea Shepard claims they were holding position and the whaling shipped steered at them. The report also said they tried to reverse so the bow did not get struck but did not have enough time. If you watch the water at the stern it seems like they are moving very slowly and right before the collision they gassed it to turn the Sea Shepard vessel. I does look to me that the whaling ship did turn slightly to the right based on the way the ships were positioned after the collision and the distance of the water cannons before and after. Either way, they are stupid for allowing their vessel to get hit by moving so close and giving no margin of error. Latest report says that it's staying bouyant for now. |

Here is another angle. If you ask me...both are at fault. The Ady Gil seems to drift in front of the whaling vessel but the whaling ship also turn towards it only to peel off to port after the collision is made. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bbuq0YEIPNU |

I can't see the video's here at work, but here is yet another account of the incident. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010 ... 786732.htm And some images from better times. http://www.bymnews.com/news/newsDetails.php?id=64354 |

The Japanese version seen on Yahoo is from the Japanese boat perspective and there's not reference on the horizon. This second video is from a third observer so you can see the relative positions of the vessels. The whaling vessel made a right turn before the impact (presumably to get closer to spray them with water cannons). Sea Shepard may have been a PITA but I think the Jap ship deserves to be torpedoed. |

Yup, I would think that they are both at fault for not heeding the "avoid colision regardless of who has the right of way" rule. What was missing in the clip that I linked to was the Ady Gil running a line and netting in front of the Japanese ship in the time leading up to the colision. Along with that was the footage from the whale ship that shows the crew of the Ady Gil pointing laser devices at the ship and crew members in an attempt to blind them. There are also reports of acid grenades being thrown at the whaling ship crew members, but I did not see any footage of that. Now I'm not saying that ships ramming other vessels is right nor am I picking sides, but if I were the captain of the whaling vessel and I were being attacked like that, I would probably use whatever means possible to stop the threat to my ship and it's crew as well. In this case, it just happend to be that size and strength were his only advantages. |

What's the history of the Earthrace Trimaran, I've not heard of it. |

I don't know if they ever made it or not because it was involved in a fatal collision with a fishing boat during the attempt. I think some rich hippy bought it for Sea Shepherd. This boat obviously has bad Ju-Ju. |

This boat obviously has bad Ju-Ju. I'm hearing that Bob Barker (former host of The Price Is Right TV show) bought it for 5 million dollars and gave it to Sea Shepherd. I don't know if that is true. It was an absolutely amazing craft. Made to cut through the waves not ride on top of them, it can be submersed up to 23 ft. It will run 25 knots. Consturcted of carbon fiber. While I can't disagree with the bad Ju-Ju statement I'm sorry to see such a craft destroyed in that manner. Reports do say the boat still floats but I can't imagine that even after repairs it would ever be the same again. |

Quote: On January 8, 2010 at 17:20 (GMT) the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society vessel Bob Barker reported the last known position of another Sea Shepherd vessel, the Ady Gil, to the Australian Rescue Coordination Center (ARCC). This report was made because the Ady Gil—which was originally going to be towed to a nearby base—is now sinking and could pose a navigation hazard for the next two to three hours. The Bob Barker’s call to the ARCC fulfilled Sea Shepherd’s legal reporting requirements for this incident, but not its obligation to protect whales from the illegal Japanese fleet that is killing whales illegally in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. The Bob Barker will now rejoin the Steve Irwin in pursuit of the whaling fleet to continue defending the whales. http://www.bymnews.com/news/newsDetails.php?id=64447 |
