Appraisal guide revalues ‘non-current’ boats

The NADA Marine Guide, published by NADA Appraisal Guides, is now offering a more accurate value on its listings of new non-current boats, the National Marine Manufacturers Association, Marine Retailers Association of America and the National Marine Bankers Association announced today.

Wow, I don't have my exact pricing from April 2009 when I was researching my boat, but their valuation has gone down by about $5k from what I remember.

I thought I got a good but not great deal last year. Suddenly I wish I hadn't looked........

Of course, I never thought I'd be making money by buying a boat.

I just boat my 2003 used and the NADA guide was way below his asking price. The seller actually thought I was just testing the waters with a low ball offer. NADA and ABOS just did a significant drop in boat prices across the board. There's going to be a big surprise as people go into the Spring if they are looking to sell.

If you compare the Summer 2009 to Winter 2010, it's staggering how much boat prices dropped.

If you look at my tag line, you see who eventually prevailed on price  .

According to NADA, my 268 has dropped $1500 in value from when I bought it in July. It's still quite a bit more than I paid.

The changes they made, are for much newer boats than ours. I never have priced our boat on NADA, as I never really have much faith in their numbers. But it at least gives you a ball-park estimate of what a boat is worth. So I priced our boat just for the heck of it. It came in just over $4K less than what we paid for it 6 years ago. So, not too bad I guess. I wish I could sell it for what NADA says it is worth, but I know better than that.

According to NADA, my boat was worth a dollar. Now it's worth a peso!

What you paid for the boat is irrelevant. The NADA and ABOS values between summer 09 and not have plunged. Your boat is worth much less.

Between the ABOS Spring/Summer 09 and Winter 09/10, the Horizon 220 dropped $6k in value.

I guess I need to find some rose colored glasses to play.....

First of all, I think that your boat is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Some could sell shoes to a dead guy and may get their asking price. Others are idiots when it comes to marketing and will loose. My Boat was listed in NADA for 7 thousand more than I paid. I could care less as I am not selling. When you buy a boat you sould expect a loss. They do not appreciate in value. In today's market you would either have to be rich or nuts to buy a new boat. You will loose about 40% to 50% of the value in 4 to 5 years. My opinion.

That right there is the truth. NADA and ABOS are guides, nothing more, nothing less. I paid less than NADA for my 225 Sundowner. I sold it for more than NADA. Its all up to finding the right seller or buyer.

To me the real value of the boat is the enjoyment you have using it and the smiles of friends who acompany you in your boating pursuits. As for the dollar value and whether it is increasing or decreasing in value, I go to work to make money and go boating to forget about work for a while.

Funny how nobody on here seems to post that they "lost money". Yeah right.

I've been on both sides of the deal. Had to sell a previous boat due to moving and wanted it gone quickly and I owned the boat and could take the hit. I sold the boat in two weeks with rock bottom pricing.

We all boat for enjoyment but we all know the best two days of owning a boat.... The pricing quides are very important because if the next owner needs to get a loan, the bank uses those numbers for finance amounts.

So you say the pricing guides don't matter? Then why does every dealer have the guide books sitting in their sales office  Take what I've posted for what it's worth. For 2009 the depreciation was accelerated more than previous years.

The guy I just bought my boat from was stunned when he saw the updated pricing numbers.

Well, I think, *correction * thought, I got a great deal on my 318. ha ha ha.

Actually, I still think I got a smokin' deal on my 318...

Sure - we can all say stuff like "the boat is only worth what someone will pay for it". which is totally TRUE.

HOWEVER, people who spend many, many, many, thousands of dollars on their boat typically have support from a financial institution. Unfortunately, financial institutions don't go by "the boat is only worth what someone will pay for it". Banks usually only cover X% of purchase price or book value, whichever is LOWER. It's the right approach.

If someone loves a boat... and it's priced higher than NADA or ABOS - the buyer could be shit outta luck.

Because it's priced higher, does that mean that the buyer is getting the shaft? Does that mean a boat in a great shape is only worth the peso that NADA has priced it at? ehh, probably not.

Looked mine up and wish I wouldn't of. Gone down about $6000.00 since I bought it last August. Good thing I have no intention on selling any time soon.

NADA says low retail for mine (not including trailer) is $42,885.00 you know what? Someone gave me that, it'd be GONE!
