Started taking a Boating class last night. I have owned boats for over 25 years and thought there would be no need, however I learned some interesting things and am looking forward to the next three nights of class. My insurance man suggested the class which he say's will reduce our premium. We will see.

Sounds interesting. Who is the class through? I would be interested in checking something like that out in the Northern KY area. Would like my kids (ages 12 and 14) to do it too.

The class is through the local Power Sqadron. It's free and must be taken by my Adult Children that operate my boat in Ohio. Thought I would take it with them and the wife to see if an old dog could learn new tricks. I found out some great information and am looking foward to classes like navigation and so forth. I was suprised that the class was full.

Signing up for the same class up here. Mine starts the 2nd and runs for six weeks, looking forward to learning and the insurance discount!

Ohio has courses offered at Last Fork Lake. Check the ODNR site for details. http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/watercraft/coursesearch/tabid/3224/default.aspx

The USCG Aux offers courses as well. Check here. http://uscgaux8er.info/pepage.htm

Up in the great white North our version of the Power Squadron course lasts 12 weeks the classes are 2 hrs long and there is a 3hr test at the end. Need 80 to pass and the insurance gives a 10% discount. The course cost around $250.00 c/w all books / charts and nav tools.
Real good we are 1/3 done.

I took the power squadrons class 10-12 years ago, I found the same thing, thought I was fairly in the know. I learned some.
Get 10% discount on boat insurance. To bad 10% of $400 is not much, but........

I recommend the class.

I know it is a touchy subject, but I am almost for a mandatory course, boat drivers Education. When there are sooooo many %^&*$% at the ramp..........

My Father in Law is Dale Wartluft. He and his twin brother Darrell and their sister Joan grew up in Louisville. Dale lives in Atlanta now. Joan is in Alliance. Darrell is in Columbus.

My father is a USPS commander on Lake Hartwell in South Carolina and is not from Ohio...

Probably one of their cousins. Also, my wife told me that technically her dad grew up in Freeburg... Her dad's sister Joan married Dale Campbell. My wifes cousins all went to Marlington and they are the Campbells...

First class in the books!

Couple of interesting things I learned
I know Mayday is for distress but I didn't know
Pan-Pan is used when on the lookout for a vessel said to be in distress, or an obstruction on the water
and Security (pronounced saycuritay) is used by freighters and other boats leaving a dock, coming around a bend, heading into a river or break wall, turning around in the channel
