Post subject:  How to get "lake stink" out of snap-in carpet?

So, I've tried to clean my carpet with one of those "do it yourself" carpet cleaners that my parents own. It cleans the carpet OK, but I can't get the stink from having lakewater get in the carpet and then dry to come out using the standard carpet cleaning stuff that is typically used with these machines.

What do you guys use to get the smell out? Do I need to just take it somewhere and have it professionally done? I'd prefer to do it myself to keep the cost down, since it seems like I have a machine that will do the job.

Thanks!

May call a dealer to see what they use for used boat prep carpet cleaning.....when i picked up my boat they had cleaned them with some stuff that smelled like "oranges"....no other odors noted, but I have no clue what it smelled like before.

I just did mine this part weekend and cleaned the bilge. I use tide in a bucket with some water, brush it on till its good and soapy then pressure wash them till the soap is out. Makes them nice and fluffy. The bilge I use Tide and bleach let it sloosh around in the bilge all day.

I vaguely recall there being some information in either the owners manual, or perhaps the new-boat package which spoke to carpet cleaning.

Must be some stinky lake water...

We pull ours out onto the fingers of our dock, scrub them down with Oxiclean and power spray them clean. Dry in the sun and good as new. Billy Mays may have sold some junk in his day, but it really does work. Also works for cleaning muddy Jeep carpets.

I just had my carpets in the house done professionally. An extra $20 got my boat carpet looking like new. I had to take it out and lay it in the driveway, but they did a great job on it.

I spray on Resolve Carpet Cleaner, scrub and then pressure washed them. However, I decided to take the cockpit carpets out this summer because of the kids (and dog) who are always swimming and getting them wet. Also, I use a cockpit cover during the summer and that would cut off the air circulation to the wet carpets resulting in possible mildewing.

+1 on OxyClean - vacuum real good first, then soak in hot water at a ratio of 1 scoop per 5G. No problem soaking overnight. Use the home shampoo'er to suck 'em as dry as possible, then leave out in the sun to dry them the rest of way. Better do bow and cockpit as they will get very clean. Don't forget the sunpad walk-thru carpet if you have sunsport seating. (I forget that one almost every season.)

I use the same "enzyme" soak for life jackets and wet suits, will kill the bacteria that cause the oder. Believe its called "Myrazime"

Dont get the carpet wet and then you will not have this problem.....

I took my carpet out and went to the local high pressure spray car wash. Did the soap setting first and then rinse. Then I hung them up to drip dry. Clean as a whislte now and no smell.
