when picking someone up from water do you aways shut down engine or just put in neutral. I think I'm being hard on the engine and starter because I have been shutting it down every 5-10 minutes to pick up people.

Hi Jman,

We always turn the motor off when anyone is near the prop, including picking skiers up. I know the prop shouldn't spin in neutral, but I feel turning the motor off is the safest way to go.

Shut it down. The wear and tear on the engine and starter is minimal compared to somebody's limbs.

Let alone the prop danger...think about carbon monoxide also. A tuber/skier behind the boat in the water is right in the exhaust stream.

Yep it doesn't take much for the gearshift to slip into gear...marine starters are cheap actually I got one new for 150...and the thing that trashes them is water leaking on them from ex manifold drains not using them...

Just kidding. I think it is a no brainer. $150 for a starter is a lot cheaper than $150,000 to reattach an arm

Agreed, always shut off the motor when someone is boarding or getting off. But, we don't have to stop the motor that often, when someone falls off we just loop around and let them get back on the tube.

We alway shut motor off.

If anyone is worried about the cost of wear and tear of starter, get rid of the boat. You gotta pay to play. I would buy a starter or two a season if need be, not gonna have the prop cut anyone.

When someone is boarding using the swim ladder (so are in the water) I always shut down. When boarding from the tube (which has a 'bottom' to it) I will shift to neutral and assist them reboarding direct from the tube to swim platform -and do so away from the outdrive.

I shut it down for the simple fact to let the person in the water know it's safe. Now on a V drive I dont shut it down.
