After getting hooked on cruising rivers, canals and locks last year in the Trent Severn, this year we bit off a bigger trip - trailered our 2005 Sundowner 205 from Toronto to Kingston, and cruised the Rideau Waterway to Ottawa, then down the Ottawa River to Montreal, then back "up" the St. Lawrence ending up back Kingston. A great adventure with tons to see and do, extraordinary scenery and experiences. Thankfully this year the weather cooperated (mostly), and it took us about 10 days to do the whole thing. I gotta admit though, at 6'3" and the admiral at 5'10", that cuddy on the 205 was getting VERY small by the end! I think I'm seeing a 248 or 258 in our future! So, here goes - a few pics ![]() Here we are the first morning before setting out. That's Kingston Penitentiary behind us - one of Canada's most notorious maximum security prisons. Weird sleeping a few hundred yards from the worst of the worst... ![]() First lock-through at Kingston Mills. Anticipation hanging in the air. ![]() The Rideau is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site - lots of history, heritage buildings, and most locks are operated the old-fashioned way: by hand ![]() Coming into downtown Ottawa - that's our famous Chateau Laurier Hotel rising in the distance ![]() One of the highlights of the trip - locking down the 8-flight locks where the Rideau and the Ottawa Rivers meet - right next to Canada's Parliament Building ![]() ...and looking back on it when we got down ![]() Only one lock on the Ottawa River - but its a doozy! Carrilon Lock is an almost 70 ft drop ![]() And it has a 150 ton "guillotine" style door that rises over your head! ![]() Took a short-cut through the Lachine Canal that takes you right to the heart of old Montreal. Not everyone can use it though - restricted to boats with a maximum 8 ft clearance! ![]() Ahhh... Montreal. North America's Paris. Ce magnifique!! This is where we stayed for the night - we're the little guy. ![]() Heading back up the St. Lawrence. Here's our first Seaway lock. Man, they're big! ![]() Like a cork in a bathtub... ![]() Lot's of these all over the place ![]() There's something humbling about cruising under huge bridges. This is the Massena-Cornwall International Bridge ![]() And finally under the Ivy Lea International Bridge in the Thousand Islands. One more stop at Gananoque for lunch, then a two-hour cruise back "home" to Kingston ![]() |

Unbelieveable! I so wish I could mysteriously have my boat materialize 3000 miles away and take the trip you went on. What a great adventure! And, what a great looking boat, for a 2003 it looks like new! |

Looks like an awesome trip. I spent 2 years going to school in Ottawa and it has always been a dream of mine to boat through there. I spent a ton of time skating the system. Thatt trip is on my list within the next couple of years! |

Great pics, that looks like a wonderful place to boat. We don't have locks anything like that here a couple on the Okeechobee water way but they only change about 5 to 8 feet nothing like the ones you went through. |

Glad to see you enjoyed our little piece of paradise... i think I saw your boat at Portsmouth to bad I didn't know it was you or I would have stopped to chat. What dates were you there? I was there on August 27. There is another FW (Vista 258) that normally slips near where your first picture was taken and that might be the one I saw though. We'll be making this trip next year for sure. |

Ok, I see what you mean now. Pre-occupation understood! ![]() Never been through a lock before, it would take some time to get use to. But the boating looks great ! |

I meant to give a big shout-out and thanks to Millhaven_Nice_Guy (Marc), and Wintermute for giving excellent advice to my post a few months ago looking for pointers on how to do this trip - Marc's suggestions on timing and where to layover on the Rideau were spot on! (btw, we started our trip on July 9, and the weather was great - except for some showers on the Ottawa River stretch). Proves again how helpful this forum is. firecadet613 wrote: Looks like a great trip! I can't imagine doing a trip like that in a 205...the scenery looks worth it though! Interesting point. Well, like anything there’s good and bad about a 10-day trip on a 205: Bad Sleeping, or rather some form of it – not a lot of room in that cuddy for a Sealy or Serta, and rolling over is a unique experience every time Storage – one has to be both creative and lean in terms of what can be brought on-board. Not a lot of places to stow things. Eating – no galley, nor a place to install a BBQ. Load up in the morning with whatever is available where you’re overnighting for breakfast and lunch – always on the lookout for a decent restaurant for dinner. Heavy water – while not bad in 1 or even 2 footers, anything higher, or strong winds can make for a brutal, bone cracking ride. Once, heading into a nasty easterly on Lake Ontario, its was so bad that the Admiral was crying…Never again. Good Size – the 205 is small enough that it’s relatively easy to find a berth at a marina, or a spot along a lock wall for the night. Most places can always squeeze you in… Gas – the 5.0 litre V6 isn’t frugal by any means, but compared to larger boats with twins? No contest. Speed – lots of times and places that you can open it up without guilt or fear of having to take a loan out for your next fill-up (see above) Access – quite simply, you can go a lot of places others can’t Trailering – small enough that you can hook it on and shuttle it around to different spots – big enough that you can spend a few days on it (see “Sleeping” above…) Envy – I was surprised at how many owners of large cruisers would mention how much fun they had when they used to own a small boat – more flexibility, less worry and cost, and less anxiety. I offered trades, but no takers yet. On the other hand, those 248’s and 258’s sure looked nice out there, and it wouldn’t take much to convince me to make the move up! |
