I try to buy from the forum sponsors associated with the forums I hang out on... Do we have any here? I did a quick search and didn't see any or who they are... I'm going to pick up a Porter Cable 7424XP along with backing plate & pads... suggestions where to buy? Couple I found outside of Ebay & Amazon... Tool King & Proper Auto Care (don't believe they sell the velcro backing plate though)?? Thanks! |

No sponsers here, buy the 7424 anywhere you find the best price. I will not add my 2 cents (again) about my feeling about that psuedo-buffer. |

Now, Now Cap'n .... You're too hard on the pseudo-buffer. I know it is not as effective as a rotary but it is excellent for a newbie. They are easy to use with very little risk of harm to the gelcoat. I have both and preferred the porter cable over my no name rotary. I have a good selection of CCS pads for the random and several sheepskin buffing pads for the rotary. I've said it before.... using one of the rotaries is an art. The "artists" keep the skill close to their heart and are afraid to share. I would love to spend a day with somebody who really knew what they were doing and could teach me all about the proper methods of using the rotary. The random was simple to use right out of the box. Make sure and get a lot of the CCS pads. I find they can get destroyed if you're going to hard and the material gets caked on plus there are lots of places to catch them on a boat...becareful around the rub rail. |

I can't believe I'd ever disagree with Cap'n on anything, but for buffing boats by non-professionals I can't imagine there's a better tool than the 7424. Unless it's the Makita that can run in either rotary mode or "pseudo" mode ![]() http://www.properboatcare.com is another source, and it'll come with the proper counterweight for buffer use (the 7424 in basic trim is actually a random orbit sander). |

It's okay not to agree. Here is another psuedo-buffer that is quite popular with the "rotary challenged" crowd. ![]() http://shurhold.com/dual-action-polisher |

The Porter Cable is good for waxing but not compounding (believe me, I know). I have the PC7424 for waxing and then some $35 Harbor Freight rotary for compounding and polishing. If your 7 year old boat is starting to oxidize, then you need both IMO. |

I've got a good compounder... though I'm not the best with it (yet). I thought I'd pick up a polisher so I can just go to work without thinking to much while polishing (ie I don't want to hurt anything ![]() ![]() |

Just did our 268 a couple weekends ago, with the "real" unit. Spent about 20 to 25 hours on it over four days. |

Wow Gordon your boat was that bad? All I've had to do was wash and polish it by hand...but she was stored indoors for a few years. It sits indoors all winter, but outside all summer. I do try to keep it shiny though! |

I haven't touched it since we bought it, so that included a good top to bottom wash, then a go-round with compound just in the areas where there were marks or scratches, then the polishing (didn't need a real compounding, so I used the Collinite cleaner), then a run through with 3M Finesse-It .. then 3m Marine Ultra Performance paste (wanted to use the Collinite Fleet Wax paste, but could not find it locally). Even though I was whipped, on Sunday after I was done, I started in on my M3 with the Finesse-It and then the wax ............ Ummm ... brilliant idea ...... Talk about being beat-up! |

Spend a few more bucks and get a Flex 3401VRG dual action. Its as easy to use as the Porter cable with a lot more power. I have both and haven't touched the P C since I got the flex. |
