Post subject:  Anchoring out overnight

Do any of you guys set two anchors at an angle of your bow when anchoring out overnight?

I have used this technique before when anchoring overnight in the North Channel of our Great Lakes. The real reason I anchored this way is because our previous boats came with a Danforth type anchor and I wasn't comfortable going to sleep for the night relying on this one anchor. So I purchased a Bruce/Claw type anchor and deployed it as well.

Now on our 328 we have a windlass and a Delta anchor. I probably wouldn't feel entirely comfortable with anchoring overnight with this one minimum factory supplied sized anchor either and am considering purchasing a second anchor to compliment the Delta or maybe upsizing the Delta.

If it were you, would you guys prefer to simply purchase a second anchor to use only when anchoring overnight and keep the factory supplied Delta as is, or would you sell the existing Delta and upsize it and just use the one anchor when anchoring overnight?

Mike.

I put a 22 pound Delta on our 298 the day we bought it (previous owner had a 14 pound Delta on it) and I'm comfortable with the one anchor. A few things to keep in mind though are weather conditions, the bottom of the area where you anchor (grass, leaves, mud, sand, rocks, gravel, etc though Delta is pretty good in most conditions), and the amount of chain you have. When it comes to chain more is better. The nice thing about the Delta is that it will reset itself if it breaks loose. I would say make sure you have a heavy enough anchor and you should be fine in most conditions but keep a spare on hand for when you need it.

We only use one anchor, 14 lbs delta. Of course our boat is much smaller, but we have never had an issue.
Have camped over night in some good breezes, some that had changed direction all night, we just pivoted around the anchor all night.
When we beach camp at Powell we do tie off the back end to the beach. Mountain lake around home, just throw anchor out and make sure we can swing around with out hitting anything,
Never lost sleep over it.
