My stomach turns just thinking about my boat stuck against that bridge. You would bang the hell out of your boat trying to get an angle away from that bridge without having the benefit of spring lines and fenders. At least it didn't turn into a salvage.

Although it would kill me to see our boat in that position, I would only have myself to blame for not making proper preparations prior to the storm. Leaving a boat tied only to a single mooring ball with a hurricane coming is just plain stupid, but risking human life to save it is even worse.

So you asked what would I do.....Double ck insurance coverage, and then start shopping for a new boat!

This is probably the best answer. I am very curious where the heck they drove off too once the video ended. Hope they have a good gel coat guy. Yikes!

I'd hope they where wearing life jackets, Hell I love my boat but I love my life more. Would have been an insurance job for me.

Maybe they had checked their insurance policy and found that damage wouldn't be covered for improperly mooring the boat in high seas/hurricane conditions. They sure did risk a lot trying to save her.

When they first got onto the boat, I was hopeful they were going to get it fired up and backed off the rocks right away. I wonder what took so long to get it fired up and underway?

From the comments on the video, I'm starting to think the people saving the boat were not the owners, just people passing by.

Agreed, it looked like they had to "get" the keys. Seemed to take a while to get the motor running, atleast. I'm still curious, after the clip stops, they are just cruising out... where too? Do they have the trailer or someplace safe to put it until the storm passes???

I agree...go with the insurance coverage, and go shopping. As far as where they where they were going...how about "a three hour tour" ? Has anyone seen this boat since?

I viewed another video taken from a vehicle who videoed this same boat for a while and then continued videoing as they drove away. It did look like there where some protected bays not far from where this SeaRay was heading out into the rough stuff.

When I first saw the video I posted I couldn't help but think to myself OK, if you where in the position of having your boat pinned up against that bridge with the conditions as they were what strategy would you use to get your boat away?

With a single engine I/O boat say 22 - 26 feet you couldn't use the twin engine I/O approach of trying to use the engines to twist the bow of the boat out into the wind. With a 27 - 33 foot boat with I/O twins and a single prop on each drive I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have enough bite from the single props to use the twin engines to twist the bow out. Twin I/O engines with duoprops would have more bite to the props to try and twist the boat out, but you would really need to get on the throttles to try and do it. It might twist it out, but not sure if it would under those conditions.

That SeaRay would have inboard engines and with the larger props placed further forward it would help with the twisting abiltity of the boat and may of been a good part of the reason he got out of that mess along with some decent boat handling skills. He's also lucky neither of those bow lines fouled his props!

I wonder on that same boat how twin I/O's with duoprops would compare to inboards in terms of twisting ability into strong winds? Anybody want to comment?

I bet while he was reversing hard into the waves he dropped a number of gallons of water right thru his cockpit and down into the galley. I know the least of his worries.

Might as well add some carpet cleaning to all the gel coat repair that will be needed. :)

Mike

They had it pinned against the rocks for a lil bit then they turned it somehow broadside to the wind and it bee lined straight to the bridge.

I agree, when the bow was pointed into the rocks and the stern facing the wind that would of been an ideal time to back her out of there and spin her around. I think the guys pushing from the bow pushed enough that the wind then spun the boat into the bridge.

It would of been better if they could of held the boat into the rocks until they got the engines fired up.
