a bit more than usual and i am finding an engine that was sold under the guise of Volvo 5.8 ( 1995 240 horizon) this thing has ford, omc, chevy, volvo parts all over the thing... it's almost as if i look at a different section of the engine a different manufacturer's parts are present is this normal. I was under the impression that this was a total volvo engine with outdrive. When i had it surveyed the person said the engine was in great shape so I didn't really question the big OMC faced plate spark resistor on the fuel injection system. |

OMC and Volvo Penta were involved in a joint venture around that time. As a result of this came the VP SX outdrive...also called the Cobra SX if it was labelled as an OMC. OMC had been using Ford based motors for some applications and Chevy motors for other applications for many years. The 5.8L was a Ford motor. There was also a 5.0L Ford motor. Eventually the OMC name was dropped and Volvo Penta took over the sterndrive business/joint venture all together. Pretty much all gas powered sterndrives are either Chevy or Ford based motors...mostly Chevy. There are certainly oddballs. What you have is a VP/OMC joint venture drive/engine combo. It is a Ford 5.8L motor. I really don't think you would find any Chevy parts on the motor. Honestly, I have no idea what you could see that would be a Chevy part on it. |

and how is this engine reviewed for the time? At present it seems to run a 4000lb boat with 6 adults at 45mph. I never was a huge fan of the omc engines but this one for now seems pretty strong. what else can you tell me the only thing i found on it that said chevy was a rubber sheath cover over what looks like the alternator. Nothing huge but it does say chevy ( maybe put on to keep out moisture or heat?) |

Please remember, there is no such thing as an OMC engine. It's either a Ford or a Chevy . The outdrive may be an OMC, but that is about it. An alternator is not necesarily proprietary to one engine builder. An alternator for a Chevy could very well be used on a Ford, or vise versa. But you will not find GM risers, Intake, valves etc. on a Ford engine. Period. |

Not to worry, the joint venture ones were pretty much the same as the Volvo version for the same model year, and if that boat was a couple of years older, you'd have one of the original OMC Cobras, which are getting harder to find parts for (but I've been able to get most things I've needed) and not too many shops will work on them. So for an older FW (most FWs from 88-93 were OMC powered because OMC owned FW till the bankruptcy) you lucked out with what is basically a Volvo and most of the parts should still be out there.... |
