Take note: Just unvieled yesterday at the Miami Boat Show. Seven Marine's 557 Outboard. Yep 557 horespower. ![]() ![]() Quote: The 6.2-liter V8 outboard features an all-aluminum, supercharged powerhead sourced from GM Powertrain that is the same engine used in the Cadillac CTS-V automobile. It has closed cooling, a computer-controlled disc-clutch transmission with hydraulic shifting sourced from ZF Marine, and joystick control when paired with bow thrusters. Awesome, I know OMC made a V-8 outboard back in the day, and Yamaha does now as well, but that's a different animal all together. |

I'm an outboard fan. That being said, I have to ask why? What actual practical purpose does such a gargantuan outboard serve? I love it from an engineering marvel standpoint and all. I think it looks incredible. I really want to know how it sounds also. I bet it has a great V8 throb. It weighs 1000 lbs. dry. Any boat that could handle this motor could easily handle twin 300 hp motors. Any boat that could handle 2 of these motors could easily handle 3-300 hp motors or maybe even 4. The redundancy and manuverability of a multi engine set up makes more practical sense. Also, at $70k, I just can't see the actual point. Don't take me wrong. If I had money to blow and wanted to make a point. I'd have a boat with at least 2 of these on it just for fun. |

At 1000 lbs the weight is approximately 2 times as much as a 300 hp outboard. The only real advantage then is that you can get 1.85 times more power with one motor than you can with 2. I suppose the reduction of drag probably makes up for slightly less power. How much does a 300 HP outboard cost? $20k? $25k? This thing is around $70k? There is a nice video on the Intrepid website....I can't find any with a running motor though. |

Seem's like a big IO engine put on-top an outboard assy. How do they pipe it for thru-hull exhaust? Anyone else remember the "L" drive in the late 80's? If I recall that was an outboard engine (2 stroker) inside a much smaller engine compartment, turning a typical outdrive. Sounds to be the opposite, but similar. Good luck getting parts for it! |
