Petrol over here in the UK has just reached a massive £6 (9.4$US) per gallon. So to fill my tiny 238 Vista (43 gallon) it's going to cost me £258 (415$US). What the hell is going on? Are you guys in the states having the same problems or is it just us mugs over here? I fear a revolt is not far away.

We are going through the same thing here. But Fuel (Petrol) is always less here than in the UK. On land it
is about $3.55 per gallon now. About .80 cents more than this time last year. It will be over $4.00 per gallon
on the water I'm sure. So from empty, it will be over $560.00 to fill our tanks.

Here in Ontario, Canada we are paying about $1.20 a litre for regular gasoline at the street pumps. This works out to about $ 4.56 US for a US gallon of gas.

Last summer our gas at street pumps was about 90 cents a litre, our marina fuel prices are about 10 - 15 cents a litre more than street prices.

At this rate, it's going to get a LOT worse before it gets any better. People are talking about $4/gallon by summer... I think we'll be pushing $4 in another 2-3 weeks. Summer? Who knows, $5 doesn't seem out of the question at all.

This is what happens when dictators and pirates are allowed to "not be told what to do."

$5.00 + fuel on the water and 4+ on land will have a serious effect on people's boating habits this summer. I know it will reduce the distance we are willing to run from the marina. We had planned a 400 mile trip in the boat this summer that has been called off. I think we will see the price of boats drop again and the number for sale rise again. I hope this doesn't deal the death blow to many of the builders.

More anchoring and swimming than cruising and tubing this year. Hey that's ok with me. The 10-11 mpg i get trailering around hurts even more at 4 or 5 dollars a gallon too, but it is well worth it. I know diesel is more expensive than gasoline, but is it more economical over all to tow with a quality diesel tow vehicle due to its typically better mpg?

IMO, not unless you tow a LOT.

Me thinks no trips to LOTO this summer. I found a few new places to anchor on stumpville, and the big muddy is ALWAYS a good option for wakeboarding!

We were planning to do the same trip up to Mackinaw(950 miles) as we did last year, but with these rising gas prices we have decided it might be best to just stay in the south half of Lake Michigan this summer. I'm just happy our marina is so close to our main hangout boaters beach!

Here in Oz we are currently seeing $1.50 a litre for regular gas at the pump ($6 per gallon) and no doubt will be probably another buck a gallon or more on the water. Still, compared to the cost of purchasing and maintaining the boat, more of a discomfort than a show-stopper.

Seems the GFC is finally easing up and so all the traders, futures guys and speculators are shifting away from gold and back in the oil market forcing the market prices for crude up.

To quote... Yardeni suggested the biggest driver of the current surge in prices is speculation by people who have little interest in oil except as a way to gamble their money. He said the latest U.S. government report on oil speculation found that large speculators had acquired options to purchase almost 80 percent of the world's entire inventory of oil.

On the face of it, that suggests speculators, not war — or even fear of war — are driving up oil prices.

I wonder how many of them did their shirts when oil prices fell from $150 a barrel to $40 the other year - lots I hope!! ....Maybe that was where all our savings disappeared to...?

Walt, I hope you are able to use the Missouri this year. Here in SE Iowa, the Corps of Engineers is already forecasting the Mississippi to run high again this year. It never did get down to normal levels this winter, and with the wetter than normal winter, I'm unfortunately having visions of last year. The Corps is saying the problem is the Red River up in the Dakotas/Minnesota (similar to last year). If their forecasts hold true, then the Missouri could see similar impacts. At 250 miles away, LOTO may be my best option again. So unfortunately, gas prices may not have anything to do with me not using my boat much again this year.

I see that new Magma grill and pedestal mount getting a lot of use this summer as we're anchored in quiet coves letting the kids swim. For us a day on the boat is a day on the boat...usually doesn't matter if we're anchored or cruising...just as long as we're on the boat.

We will boat no matter what. Its what we do as a family. $5, $8, we will find a way to make it happen.

Your kids are only the age they are once. Make the most of it.

Gas on land went up from $3.55 yesterday morning to $3.67 this morning. Inching up quickly on the $4.00 mark.
