I had the boat out all weekend up in Destin and after running with the Captain's call on for the guys, I switched it off and one side is still stuck open. Is there a way I can manually close the exhaust for now? Thanks for any help that can be offered.

There are some solenoids on each side of your exhaust system. You can manually move the valves by actuating the solenoids/linkage by hand. Perhaps one solenoid or both are bad? Did you happen to switch from quiet to loud at a higher than idle engine speed? If so, you may have bent one/both of the butterfly valves.

Mine did that a few times when it was new... Have you tried cycling them rapidly a few times at idle? You can get a peice of wood and tap on the assy if needed. Should be able to move them by hand with the solenoid de-energized.

Is that true? I've never heard that before. I couldn't find anything in my documenation, but I don't have access to my Corsa manual at this time, just my FW owner's manual. I did some quick searches on the internet and couldn't find anything that would indicate switching at high rpm's is a no-no. I sure would appreciate it if anyone could clarify this for me.

On a related note, while searching the internet on my question above, I ran across a topic indicating you shouldn't run exhaust on higher HP big blocks through the outdrive at rpm's above 3k. They said the backpressure wouldn't allow the engine to breath properly, potentially causing damage to the engine, exhaust manifolds and/or outdrive. I find this one hard to believe considering they make 8.1L big blocks without the captain's call exhaust option. I think this information mainly applied to high performance boats with >500hp engines, but thought I would ask to be sure.

This is my first boat with captain's call exhaust, so any information that would help me prevent from damaging my boat would be greatly appreciated.

I was told by my dealer to never switch it at greater than 1000 rpm.

Pre SXA drives, the big blocks were fitted with the SX-MHP ( "Minimum Hydrostatic Pressure") transom shield, as were some small blocks (mine included); this has an exhaust pipe connected to the transom only, the other end is close to the exhaust stub on the outdrive, but doesnt contact it. As the drive is tilted slightly, this allows most of the exhaust to exit without going through the outdrive. Non "MHP" assemblies have an exhaust hose connected at both the transom and outdrive ends, which passes the exhaust through the outdrive. I don't know what they did with the SXA transom shield/ outdrives.

I reached back and grabbed the solenoid and valve on the starboard side and the valve came apart from the solenoid and a spring ended up in my hand. I will probably get around to looking more into this problem next week.

I wasn't able to deal with that, but did take all day to find a trim line hose for the trim/tilt on the outdrive, as it was leaking and had water in the fluid. Got the old stuff drained and will have the new hose tomorrow to put in and then completely flush the system.

Well, since I too have Captain's Call and was never told of when not to switch it open and closed, I went right to the horse's......mouth and called Corsa. I spoke with the Marine division and they said they advise switching at 3000 rpms and below without problem. He said he had never heard of the 1000 rpm theory. That's a LOT of wiggle room without worry...... Hope that helps and makes a few of us feel better.

Thats certainly good to hear. Perhaps my dealer told be that to GIVE me that margin of error?

Perhaps, but my guess is that he didn't know and was just guessing. That's a pretty big margin of error....on my boat 1000 r's is about 5 mph, and 3000r's is probably 35mph!

Thanks, Scotch! I tried looking this up on their website which was a waste of time. My next step was to make a phone call. Now I don't have to thanks to your initiative.

I had never heard this before and wouldn't have thought twice about switching at any rpm level. Mine snap in and out with authority. I think if you had your hand inside there when someone flipped the switch it might take your fingers clean off. I might need a lockout device if I ever have to disassemble it.

Bull, good luck on your fix. Please let us know what you find when you get it completed.

My dealer indicated that during the orientation. He advised not switching above idle speed.

I messed with it a little tonight, but didn't spend much time on it. This will be a Sunday project, but we will get the boat out tomorrow and do some tubing and skiing.

My dealer gave the same orientation advice as Walt B's- don't switch in and out of Captains Call above idle speed. He promised it would give trouble if I did and said to bring it in to the service dept to fix.

I found the problem. I will post pics tomorrow. Seems as though the shaft the butterfly valve is on snapped into 2 pieces. It appears as though the problem has been there a while, from looking at the shaft there is very little silver from a fresh break, mostly bronze colored. Like I said, pics tomorrow.
