I had serious water mixing in my boat last summer due, I suspect, to ethanol. I had to use a couple quarts of Stabil to get it to mix and run. I am considering a fuel/water separator filter like one of these from Moeller. It has a witness bowl on the bottom where I can see how much water has been separated and drain it off before it overwhelms the filter. Has anyone used something like this? The ones with the clear bowls say for "outboard engines only" but there is one with an aluminum bowl that is supposedly good for inboard engines. The clear bowl ones are outboard only because a fire in the engine compartment would melt the plastic bowl. This could make the fire a lot worse. Using one in the open air of an outboard setup would avoid the closed compartment aspect of a fire. For safety (and insurance) sake it's best to not use the plastic one down in an engine compartment. More often than not any water issues are not caused by the ethanol. Most of the time the water gets pumped in from the source, not as a result of any condensation once it's on your boat. So unless there's some way for water to get into your tanks (like a vent pointing into spray or leaks into the filler from the deck) the problem is being caused from the fuel dock. Arguably it'd be just as bad with gas without the ethanol. I'm no ethanol fan, just want to dispel myths unsupported by facts.

Yep you need to use the ones with the metal bowl for an I/O. Just make sure there is enough room underneath it to get it on and off, because they are longer than the standard filter. They will hold more water which is a good thing, but there are more possible leak points (lower gasket, drain plug) so just keep that in mind. I have been using the regular Sierra 10 micron filters without difficulty for years. I take it off at winterization and pour out the gas in a glass jar and check for water....
