I was having some mild overheating issues last time I took the boat out 2 weeks ago, and went ahead and changed the impeller and t-stat. I had to do this at the storage facility we have so I didn't get a chance to hook it up to the hose until last night, and now there is no water coming out of the exhaust. I pulled some of the hoses and it appears that water is not even making it up the intake line to the water pump. Oh, one other thing I did was remove the captain's call y-pipes and installed elbows and just capped the transom holes for now until I decide to fix the captain's call or permanently do away with it. I am guessing there is an air leak on the intake line from the outdrive, but does anyone have anymore suggestions, and some troubleshooting suggestions. Thanks for any information y'all can provide. |

Was the old impeller still in good shape or had it come apart some? If it had come apart some could there be a chunk blocking a port? Did you install the new impeller facing the correct way? I have never changed an impeller but from all I've read these are common causes. |

It was in good shape, and actually last night, while working on the boat until midnight hoping to go out today, I put the old one back in, just to verify. |

Are the hoses on the water pump the right way around ? It's very easy to mix them up ( as I found a month ago, rushing to get the boat ready in the rain when it was getting dark !). I ran the engine using the flush line, I noticed the risers and manifolds were getting hot. It didn't damage the impeller as it was still being fed with plenty of water. Graham |

Graham That was actually the first thing I checked last night. I went ahead and dropped the boat off with the mechanic and will update this thread once I find out what happened. |

Sorry, I didn't read your original post as thoroughly as I should have; if water is not even getting to the pump inlet, there's likely a blockage either in the outdrive, or in the power steering oil cooler; that's fitted in the hose from the transom to the water pump. Graham |

I'd remove the water inlet covers on the drive and check for zebra mussles inside. If that fails to turn anything up, remove all the water hoses and check for collapse of the internal walls. Thats what I'd look for after mild water flow issues. John |

OK, I'm an idiot, and I found out why you shouldn't work in the dark, and if you do, make sure you double check things with a good flashlight. Come to find out the problem was an o-ring on top of another o-ring on the housing, not allowing the impeller to be seated right. However, this was a blessing, because while it was in, I had them pull the drive and they found a bad gimble bearing that would not come out. They had to drill it out and finally got it out and replaced. Luckily nothing else was bad. Also the bellows had a pin hole, which obviously contributed to the gimble. All-in-all, it was a good thing that I screwed up, should be good to go for the year. |
