I'm currently living in Northwest Arkansas and interested in buying a 2011 Four Winns H180 with a MerCruiser 4.3L (carbureted) Alpha 190 hp engine. If I ever move back to CA, it would be the best interest to equip the H180 with MerCruiser 3.0L MPIC (fuel injected) Alpha 135hp engine to meet the California Air Resource Board emissions requirements. However, I found something interesting on the Mercury website:

If I move into California with a 2008 or later engine without catalytic converters, can I register or use that boat in California? There could be penalties associated with registering a boat without a catalytic converter-equipped engine. The boat may be registered in California if the owner can certify that at the time of purchase the owner was a resident of another state and the boat was registered in another state. For more information, visit the California Air Resources Board Web site at http://www.arb.ca.gov/homepage.htm.

Has anyone successfully registered their out of state boat in CA with a 2008 or later engine w/o a cataytic converter? I'd prefer to have the 190hp engine because of the power to weight ratio, but I'd like to make sure first.

Pretty simple. Having grown up in So Cal.....why would you I go back? Living in Texas is much better and I would assume the sane for Arkansas. Buy a boat based on your desires today...don't buy on the fear you might move back. The boat is easy to sell if you find yourself going behind enemy lines again.
