I think I would think twice about boating on water that drains into the Niagra waterfall..too much stress! Why didnt they try to throw out an anchor to keep from drifitng down river??

They did throw an anchor, but it didn't hold. The closer you get, the faster the water. They probably should have thrown it sooner.

Cab : Do you know if they came from East or West River ? We were in The West down that way but didn't see anything going on.

Not sure which side they were on. I am on that river all the time I have yet to find a spot for the anchor to hold, I have given up trying even with 6ft of chain and 150 ft of anchor line I cant get my anchor to hold. I do have a spare 150 ft of anchor rope and am going to buy a second anchor, chene type just as a bit more help in case I ever need it. I did pick up a hand held vhf radio at west marine in the winter, I just have to register it with BoatUS that way if I hit the emergency button they know me and can get a fix on my position. Got to be worth it.

It's definitely good to have a VHF on board. But the river there is right in the middle of a fairly populated area. It's no surprise they had cell coverage. The best part about VHF is you can usually talk right with the local water cops (USCG, etc) instead of trying to find your way through various phone switchboards.
