Hi All.
New here the the site.
Would like to say HI.
I have a FourWinns 1991 Freedom 170.
I would like to know if the thermostat rating of 190* is to high for this boat?
the engine is a 4cyl 115 hp.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome!!!
190, is too high. 150 to 160 normally, You must be looking at the local auto-parts store, they won't have the right one.

Thanks for the warm welcome!
Popped the old stat off tested it in the house (hot water in pot on stove).
It looked like it was fine. It opens and closes. so back in it went!!
Took the ole "Know knots" out today. started out fine for about 3 hrs,
Launched out of South River Boat Club. Can you guess where?(S.R.) NJ.
Got a call on the tele about a run off out by the Conference house off Staten Island.
so off I went. Got to the train swing bridge looked at the temp gauge  It was reading 240*, well we couldn't go on like that so turned around and limped back to port. Stopping along the way to cool down a bit. Intake water fine. Disconnected the hose at the stat from the intake manifold. First steam then water. If the engine runs with the hose off it stays cool. and water flows from all open ports and hoses. when this hose is reinstalled the system becomes air bound and no water circulates. Could it be the thermostat is really not working or is the engine water pump bad? The mystery

many possible probs - bad therm, clogged system, impeller needs replacement and may have broke apart and clogged some ports, could be the engine water pump - but that is not a very common prob.

I agree the 160-170 range is about right for fresh water - cooler for salt water since saltwater will start to crystalize at that temp and needs to run a little cooler.

Thinking about removing the T stat and just letting the raw water flow!
Whats the thought on that?
Don't have money for another new engine water pump which was replaced last spring. I firmly believe that pump is still working anyway.
Just replaced intake pump the other day, plenty of water pumped from the sea to the engine T stat housing. Just one of those mysteries of the deep!LOL!

That's NOT a good idea. To limp in , sure but not a cure. Engines need to run at operating temperature for a ton of reasons. The engineers designed them to run at certain temps. By removing the stat, you defeat all of that. Mainly, the piston, rings and block will not expand to specs and wear out in a heartbeat.
