Post subject:  On-board battery charger questions...

I have a 1999 Horizon 180 w/ 130 OB that has a Guest ChargePro 2611 battery charger installed. It appears that this charger is hooked up to the two 12V batteries for the trolling motor (in series for 24V). It has a thru-hull plug adapter on the transom in order to plug the charger in and all appears to be working fine.

The 12V battery for the engine (3rd battery) does not appear to be hooked up into the system. I haven't actually traced the wires, but the charger is only set up with two connections (according to the manual). I would like to get the engine battery hooked up to a charger also.

So my question is, do I get a separate charger for the engine battery and install an addition thru-hull plug-in adapter, or do I get a 3-way battery charger? Like this one I guess the biggest issue is whether a 3-way charger can charge a single 12V battery along with 2- 12V batteries in series (24V) at the same time. I don't know if they can (electricity is not usually my friend).

Anybody have any ideas?

Personally, I would buy a 3rd charger if nothing is wrong with the old one. I would splace into the A.C. wires to power the new charger. That link, that is a Promariner charger which you can pick up for less$$

I included that link because there was one of those for sale here locally with an asking price of $120 (new in box). I can pick up a generic on-board battery charger for one battery at Harbor Freight for $20. That would make a somewhat decent charger to add on for just the engine battery.

If it was me, I would go with a Guest or more so a Promariner. Both are marine rated and you can get them cheaper than from that link. With a good charger, your battery will last longer and charge faster.

I would go with a 3 three battery charger instead of poking another hole in the transome.

Why would you "poke" another hole in the transom. Just wire it to the the exsisting charger.

But my question in using a 3-battery charger still stands....

Can you run (1) battery at 12V and run another (2) batteries in 24V off of the same 3-battery charger?

That depends on the brand. I know with a 3 bank Promariner, you can. The others, I don't now.

http://www.pmariner.com/productFeature. ... 012&page=1 Look at PDF page 8 or page 10 of there manual.

I would go to the web site to your charger.
