Hi Terry,
Wife and I just last week did the Nexus thing in Toronto, no one mentioned a BR number. We are planning to go to Mackanac Island the first week of Aug so we will find out. Thanks for the info.
When we were required to attend our Nexus interviews in the US (my wife and I and our 8 year old son) it was suggested to us by US Customs and Immigration to obtain our BR #. It was a simple form we filled out at the US and Customs office that was intended to aid in expediting the time it took to complete our call into the US upon our arrival into the US by boat.

My experience is that is does reduce the time required to call in to report our arrival into the US from Canadian waters. A number of other boaters from our marina also have their BR numbers for the same reason as us.

BR numbers in my opinion are not necessary, but may be useful if you run your boat over to the US from Canada frequently.

Friends, I have gotten conflicting stories about paperwork necessary for reentry into US after visiting Canada via boat. Michigan SOS says I can reenter with an enhanced drivers license. US department of State, through travel.state.gov, says I need a passport. Any help? Dan

I haven't used it yet but I just renewed my Michigan drivers license with the enhanced license. I understood that it was good for land or sea travel but not air for travel to/from Canada, Mexico, or Carribean. I do have a passport also but don't always carry it, they did have to see the passport when I got the enhanced license.

At least in Washington, the enhanced license will get you in/out of Canada by car or by boat.

I'm not 100% sure for you gents on the U.S. side, but from the Canadian side, we need a passport in or out. We just applied for ours, in preparation for a trip into Boston & Cape Cod later this summer. I liked things much better when I just needed a drivers licence!

We use our Nexus cards for our boating trips into US waters and back into Canada. We have used the Nexus cards with no issues for about the last 6 years. Prior to Nexus we would have to go over to the US and get the I 68's for entry into the US. What really speeds up our entry into the US when we call in after arriving is our BR number. This BR # links our Nexus card to our boat information, to our personal information and to our home address. I like to have printed on a business card size card for my wallet the following details in case asked when calling in to foreign ports of call...... - Our boat hull # - Our boat registration # - Our 30 foot decal # - My Nexus card # - My BR # - My wife and son's Nexus and BR # We record in our log book when we arrive in a port and call in and the report # we get at the completion of our call in. We do this for both entry and returning back. Mike.

As of 23 January 2007, all Canadians entering the U.S. require passports… However, I am not clear about true requirement for entering Canada for US Citizen on Water… We ask all our friend who visit us for boating to bring their passport since we boat back and forth with US/Canada border all the time when we go out on the river. (St Lawrence) All of Canadian docks near by require registration with Passport when we dock. Also we are always subject to get pull over by boarder patrol as well… We got pulled over few times and they always asked us to show our passport so we carry them with us . CANPASS(for American) and NEXUS(for Canadian) Card are another way to get in and out both countries freely. The bottom line is if you have a passport you are 100% all set…
