Have any southern California boaters made the trip out to Catalina Island? My girlfriend and I were thinking of heading out to Catalina from San Diego for the long weekend. It looks like moorings may be difficult to come by in Avalon, but can be reserved online at Two Harbors. We could always anchor in the anchorages, but I would probably sleep better in a mooring. Also, we were curious if there was anything specifically worth doing while out there? What was the mark up in fuel on the island? Etc... Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated. I don't put my boat in salt water but I have sailed to Catalina with my dad more times than I can remember. Generally we stay at Two Harbors because it's more low key and quieter with far less boaters and moorings compared to Avalon. (Except during Buccaneer Day's in early October). There is only one restaurant, one bar and a general store that has a little bit of everything including boat hardware. The fuel dock is at the end of the main pier. Besides hiking and swimming/fishing there is nothing more to do than relax. Try a buffalo's milk at the bar. It's their specialty and it's very similar to a White Russian. Avalon has both inner and outer harbors. Mid-week is always easier to get a mooring. There are many shops, restaurants and bars. The cruise ships stop here and the boardwalk is always busy weekends. As far as activity's on the island you can rent golf carts or bicycles to tour the island, there is a movie theater in the old casino, golf course, fishing/swimming, hiking and people watching. Luau Larry's is a pretty good place on the boardwalk or the Marlin Club just off the Main street is where you can meet a salty bunch of locals. Fuel dock is in the north part of the main harbor by the casino. Both destinations have water taxi's. I think the water taxi is $4.75 per trip per person ($9.50 round trip from your boat to the dock) so bring your inflatable. |
