It's always sad to see stuff like this happen when it could have been prevented. I don't know the circumstances around this, only based on the article. Pulling a tube at speed through concrete pillars under a bridge...the adults should have known better and the teen has to live with this.

The Cornell Fire Department and EMS and a Life Link air ambulance assisted at the scene.

I seen that exact same thing when I first started boating here, luckily the two kids on the tube had enough sense to bail off the tube before it hit the bridge pillar. When the tube hit the bridge it snapped the line instantly and was thrown 100' or more. If those kids would have stayed on the tube they would have been in trouble, they had life jackets so someone was thinking - up to point of trying to pull a tube at 20mph sideways under a bridge anyhow.

I'm not very religious, but things like that are the reason I always pray for everyone's safety (especially my family) while on the water.

I know this was honestly a stupid mistake that should have been avoided, but I also know that throughout my life I've made many stupid mistakes that either ended up fine, or with minor consequences but could have ended tragically.

It only takes a few minutes or even a split second of poor judgement or inattention. :(

I saw a similar thing happen a couple years ago at Bahia Honda in the Florida Keys. A guy was pulling his wife or girlfriend on a tube in the channel near the US 1 bridge...he swung a turn too close to the bridge and the tube slammed into one of the concrete pilings. Miraculously she wasn't hurt.

I don't pull tubes, too damn dangerous due to lack of common sense boaters, big wakes, etc. I keep the kids under my supervision IN the boat. I know it sounds like an old fart attitude but I see so many examples of irresponsible and ignorant behavior, no way am I putting a kid in a tube...

In Texas you must come to a no wake speed under bridges, sounds like the adults in the boat didn't know what the heck was going on.

I'd tend to agree in busy areas. I try to talk the kids out of it but usually give in for a while. I'd much rather ski, wakeboard or kneeboard (and most of the time my kids would too). But that's on fairly quite local lakes. When we go to the Mississippi or a busy lake it's pretty rare unless we can find a quiet safe area like a quiet bay off Lake Pepin.

I can't believe when we go to the Mississippi and see cruisers on plane, barges, GFBLs, all in the navigational channel and then along comes a family with a couple kids on the tube. :roll:

I'm with you, if I was the only one on the lake I would do it but sooo many people are dragging kids around the TN river on weekends with everything from huge barges, to huge cruisers with the 'I'm bigger than you so GTFO of my way' attitude, to people seeing how fast they can go on the longer straights in their go-fast boats to the hundreds of smaller boats cruising around. If one of those kids fall out in front of one of the bigger boats they are going to be in trouble. I could never see the logic of pulling tubes at 30mph on a busy, somewhat narrow river.

But I know a lot of kids enjoy it, mine tried it a couple times and they dont care for it. I've seen parents dragging their kids on tubes for miles and some even pass me when I'm at my usual 27-28mph cruise speed and cut right in front of me with their kids hanging on for dear life, nuts.

I don't mind pulling a tube in my lake as usually I'm the only one out there, however I wouldn't do it on the 4th
of July weekend. Too many boats out there/crazy busy.
