Post subject:  Volvo Duoprop
Yesteday while pull a wake boarder at approximately 22 miles an hour I hit a submurged stump. I put a serious bend in one of the blades on the front props. The prop actually folded in half. Theis is a F6 prop set. Where is a good place on line to find a replacement? What are the chances that that is the only damage? Do ya'll think I may have also damaged the drive. I can spin the prop and every thing seems normal.

Ouch. A new set from any retailer will run $1,300-1,600, but it sounds like you only need the front. I would at least have a look at eBay - you can sometimes get sets in virtually new condition for half that amount (it's not a bad idea to have a spare set anyway).

You could also check with a good prop shop to see if yours can be repaired. I've been very impressed with these guys, who happen to be local for me - http://www.midwestpropeller.com. They're a small 2-3 man shop but repair props sent from all over the world.

As to further damage - I'd be concerned about a strike that was hard enough to fold a stainless prop in half. I'd have the drive checked by a pro if it was me.

I too recommend that you just have current prop repaired along with having drive inspected for any, seals, gear or bearing damage.

With a DP drive, carrying a spare set is really out of the question, they take up too much room, along with being very heavy. Our past single prop boats we always had a spare aluminum prop in a storage area, but they only cost approx $100 also.

You can also try to claim it on your insurance. You said you hit a submerged stump. So it's an accident and might be able to claim it.

750 is a fair price, I paid 550 for a brand new pair of F4s on eBay but that was an extremely good deal from a marine store liquidation.

I have 2 sets of props, so in case I hit something (and odds are I will bend a prop at least once a year, lots of debris floating in the TN river) and bend one I just swap them out and bring the damaged set to a local prop rebuilder. In the busy season it can take 3-4 weeks to get them repaired so its good to have a spare pair.

You can also use aluminum props for spares and there is also the composite props that will fit if you buy the right hardware.

I had a similar thing thing happen with my old boat. I struck something under the water with my prop and it bent the blade enough to put it out of balance and ruin the seals in the lower unit. My bent blade wasn't noticeable like yours so I continued boating. After about an hour, my outdrive seized up because I had lost all the fluid out of my lower unit. Luckily the $4000 repair bill to rebuild the outdrive was covered under my insurance. So my recommendation is to definitely have it checked out.

Spare DP sets are definitely too big to keep aboard (at least in a Horizon). I was just saying that owning a spare set can prevent a ruined weekend.

The front prop is fited to a tubular drive shaft; after a hard knock, that shaft can bend. There is a specified maximum run out between the inner and outer propshaft, that for sure needs to be checked.

On my previous boat I hit something submerged with a bravo 3 drive (duo prop) and bent one of the blades on the back prop into a 90 degree angle. I was able to get it repaired relatively cheaply. Worked as good as new after the fix.

Got a quote of $75.00 to repair at the local prop shop. Will take it in tomarrow. He even stated I would be back on the water for the weekend. I hope it is true.

Awesome Deerhunter! What color is your boat I have the same one well kind of I am still awaiting delivery. I have heard stories about that duoprop and how much it costs if you bang it up. A question for you deer hunter have you checked to see if you can just put a single prop. New to boating so I am not sure if that is a ridiculous question but I am curious if you can just keep a single prop in your boat as a spare.
