Ugh.... makes me shudder. A boat fire would be the one thing I would really worry about if I had a cruiser. Mainly worrying about being trapped below if fire broke out....

Any word on the suspected cause?

My wife, son and I were vacationing on our boat in July 2008 in Lake Erie and while docked at Bay Point Marina in MarbleHead Ohio a fire on a boat broke out directly behind ours at approximately 11:00pm. I was on our boat with our son who was sleeping, while my wife and two friends were on the dock in front on our boat.

My wife smelled something funny, stood up and saw the boat behind on fire. By the time she immediatley alerted me to the fire and I quickly went below and to get my son off our boat that boat behind was engulfed in flames. I couldn't back our boat out of our well as I would of had to back up too close to the burning boat. Very quickly other boats caught fire that were down wind and these boats were not too far away from Bay Points fuel dock. Most of these boat were in the 35 - 40 foot range. About three boats burned down to the rub rail and at least one sank.

Firefighters were on scene within about 5 minutes and it took quite a while to try and contain the fire. We got back to our boat about 3am while watching from a safe distance. My son has still not forgot about this night and would of only been 5 years old then.

I have pictures taken from a couple docks in front of our boat that show flames towering above our boat. The back of our boat got warm but the wind direction and firefighters saved our boat.

I have since always had two smoke alarms in our cabin. I think all boats with cabins should have smoke detectors in them. You just never know when a boat might catch fire and it could be your neighbours beside you.
